It is hard to believe that May is upon us already and another semester is almost completed! We are so thankful that you have put your trust in us for your graduate academic pursuits. We’ve had a great year, highlighted by a renewed focus on our graduate students and an excitement to spearhead so many new events, such as the Wine and Cheese Social at Christmas at the Hall, several Career Center and Financial Aid Workshops, collaboration with the Buccino Leadership Institute for a free offering for our Graduate Students and, most recently, the celebration of National Graduate Student Appreciation Week. We look forward to continuing these events in the coming year and adding more programming and information sessions to support you through your journey.
Also, as the semester ends, we would like to offer our congratulations to those of you that are on course to earn your graduate degrees this May. We know the hard work and dedication that entails and are so excited for your next chapters. | Aina Plana Ventosa
Graduate Student from Barcelona, Spain
Aina competes on Seton Hall’s Women’s Tennis team. She will earn her M.S. in Professional Communication and Digital Media Arts this May. She had a fantastic year on the court for the Pirates, having started the spring on a 12-match winning streak in singles, the longest win streak by any Pirate in the last 15 years. She led the team in 2023-24 with 14 overall singles victories.
When asked about her time here, here’s Aina had to say:
Why did you choose Seton Hall University?
“I chose Seton Hall because it was a strong academic institution close to New York City, where I knew that there would be opportunities after graduation, and for its strong athletics program.”
How has your student experience been at Seton Hall?
“My student experience has been very enriching. I’ve made very good friends, and the professors here on campus have been very helpful to me over my five years. They push you out of your comfort zone to go the extra mile to learn.”
What about your graduate school experience?
“Here in my master’s program, it’s very intimate and the professors really get to know you and help you become a leader in communication. I’ve gotten to really focus on developing and experiencing what the real world is going to be like after graduation as opposed to just learning concepts.”
What has it been like as an international student coming so far from home to study?
“It was hard coming from Spain initially, but Seton Hall and the athletics department have really helped me find a new home here across the Atlantic Ocean. Even though it can sometimes be hard, the Office of International Programs has been very helpful for keeping me on track, especially with my visa. Me and my fellow international students have built a new family, including my tennis teammates, who are almost all international students.”
What do you attribute your success on the court to this season?
“This season, I really wanted to finish my career in a strong way, and this year I dedicated all my matches to my uncle, who recently passed away, and it gave me the strength to push hard and succeed this year. Also, the coaching staff has been very helpful, especially the addition this year of assistant coach Judy Kaplan, who has helped mentor me.”
