STS Director Dr. Paul N. Edwards and the IPCC Assessment Report

For the last three years, STS Director Dr. Paul N. Edwards served as one of the 234 Lead Authors on the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, released in August 2021.  In an interview with Strekla Mag, Dr. Edwards talked about knowledge infrastructures and geoengineering, as well as policy and visual aspects of the landmark report on climate change.  The science journal Nature also polled Lead Authors of IPCC Sixth Assessment (including Dr. Edwards) on their views about the future of climate change. Over 60 percent think the world will reach 3 degrees of warming or more by 2100 - a catastrophic level.

The WetNet: What the Oral Polio Vaccine Hypothesis Exposes about Globalized Interspecies Fluid Bonds

by S. Lochlann Jain, Professor of Anthropology

Dr. Jain analyzes the aftermath of Edward Hooper's suggestion that the trial of an oral polio vaccine (OPV) in the Belgian colonies of Africa engendered the pandemic form of the AIDS virus, HIV-1. The COVID-19 pandemic draws attention to the critical importance of studying The WetNet, a concept coined by Dr. Jain to name the conceptual and material infrastructures of inter- and intraspecies fluid bonding. New Course: STS 51D

Did you have an opportunity to take part in our amazing STS 51 three-part series last year (A,B, and C)?? If not, no worries! A brand new course, STS 51D: Ethical STEM: Race, Justice, and Embodied Practice, is being taught by our incredible affiliated faculty, Assistant Professor Aileen Robinson! Note: this course builds upon the STS 51 series from 2020-21, but it is not a prerequisite for the new course. This course can be used to meet part of the STS Social Science and Humanities Program Core, or for part of the Socio-Cultural requirement for the following STS Concentrations: Innovation and Organization, Life Sciences and Health, and Politics and Policy. See the course description here.

Winter Capstone: STS 200N

If you are a senior and planning to graduate this year you MUST take senior capstone (in either Autumn, Winter, or Spring) if you haven't already done so. This year's capstone course offered in the Winter will be STS 200N: Funkentelechy: Technologies, Social Justice and Black Vernacular Cultures, taught by Professor Adam Banks. See the course description here.

One-Time Offering: HISTORY 243D

Taught by Professor Monica Green, HISTORY 243D: Emerging Diseases, Past and Present will use our current experience with the COVID-19 pandemic as a lens to study the processes by which infectious diseases emerge. Because of recent developments in the "historicist sciences" (bioarchaeology and palaeogenetics), it is possible to piece together the origin stories of some of the world's most impactful diseases. Offered in the Winter Quarter only, this course can be used to meet part of the Socio-Cultural requirement for the following STS Concentrations: Life Sciences and Health and Catastrophic Risks and Solutions. See the course description here.
