AWHONN POST-BIRTH Warning Signs Training
TIPQC is excited to offer the opportunity for TN hospitals and other TN maternal outpatient clinics, doulas, and midwifes to receive the AWHONN POST-BIRTH Warning signs training* for nursing staff who will educate patients on warning signs and when to seek immediate medical attention thus saving lives. TIPQC will pay for this training for 10 nurses by Dec 2021 through a grant from ACOG AIM and TDH MMR, to implement the tool kit and POST-BIRTH patient education in discharge planning.
POST-BIRTH women at risk for potential life-threatening medical complications that can occur after hospital discharge. Materials are in 4 languages including English, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese.

*Provide provider & patient education regarding the dangerous POST-BIRTH warning signs and needed treatment. Increasing the number of women who recognize potential life-threatening POST-BIRTH warning signs that can occur after hospital discharge and educating them on when to obtain immediate medical attention. Each participating hospital will develop a standard approach to postpartum discharge education provided by nurses during the hospital stay. The program includes online education on maternal morbidity and mortality and how to deliver consistent messages about warning signs that can signal serious complications. The course also provides a discharge education checklist that includes points for nurses and a handout for all mothers to take home.
Expected outcomes:
- To reduce the preventable deaths of TN POST-BIRTH moms through education and reminders on Warning Signs. The top 6 causes listed below in the TN MMR Report, could be impacted by this project.
