Dear First-Year Families,
It has been wonderful meeting so many of you during our Summer Welcome Receptions across the country and online. We are so excited for you and your student to join our Denison community.
Welcome to the Denison Family Guide, a monthly email newsletter for Denison parents and family members. This publication highlights important campus events and deadlines and equips you with knowledge and resources to help you help your student navigate Denison. While we want your student to be in the driver’s seat of their experience, we know they sometimes turn to you for advice; providing you with information about resources and opportunities allows you to amplify messages we are also sharing with your student.
Each month will feature opportunities for you to engage — perhaps a reception we’re hosting in a city near you or a virtual event. Families are such an important part of our Denison community, and we hope to see you at our events, both on and off campus.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to meeting you on Move-In Day!

This summer, Class of 2028 families and students met at welcome receptions held virtually and in cities across the country. These gatherings provided an opportunity for first-year students and families to connect with peers in their city before arriving on campus.
In July, we hosted a virtual welcome session for families, where Nathan Graves, associate dean of student support, shared tips for navigating this transition. Topics included communicating with your student, wellness, housing and roommates, FERPA, and student involvement. We encourage you to watch the video.

Conversations To Have With Your Student |
In these final days before your student moves to campus, it is an important moment to have some conversations about the transition. We recently asked some current students to reflect on important conversations in these final weeks. Here are their suggestions:
|
-
Normalize the “Big Lonely.” No matter how busy or involved you are, everyone feels it at some point, the feeling that everyone else has more friends or is having more fun than you. I talked about this with my mom after going through that my first semester, and she reassured me that everyone feels that way. - Andrew Hanson ’26
-
Ask your student what they want from their college experience. I wish that my mom would have sat me down and made me think about why I was going to college and what I wanted from my four years, not just a degree but what I was hoping to learn as a developing young human. I still ask myself that question every day. - Annabelle Calderon ’25
-
One important thing that I wish I would’ve talked more with my parents would be finances. Being able to manage your own spending habits, whether that be eating out or buying clothes or whatever, it’s really important to know the value of money and budget, especially since college can be super expensive. It’s also important to note that an education at Denison is not something that comes cheap, and that means it should be valued and its resources taken full advantage of. - Alex Carlton ’26
- Form relationships with my professors. They emphasized the importance of introducing myself to each professor on the first day of class and really taking the time to get to know them and build a relationship over the semester. - Sydney Wood ’25
