Our Next Sermon Series

I've been thinking for several weeks now about what I think should be our next series of sermon. I've decided that for the next seven months we are going to be thinking about Jesus almost entirely.

The Jesus sermons will be interrupted occasionally by what in the printing world is called an excursus. These will be little "excursions" in to relevant subjects that pertain to the life of Jesus.

The first two sermons will be excursus, devoted to two subjects that you must absolutely know about in order to make sense of the planning and cause of Jesus' incarnation or ministry.

I'm excited about this series and looking forward to sermon number one on the preexistence of Jesus. I hope you will make every effort to be present for the series and, when absent, that you will listen to the podcast.

Francis Collins

Francis Collins was the director of the National Institutes of Health and also head of the Human Genome Project, and he is the author of The Language of God. A man of great faith, he is eminently qualified to talk about the intersection of faith and science.

I think you will enjoy hearing this wonderful 5-minute video about that subject and its importance.

Wisdom from N.T. Wright

I have never been attracted to the mythological descriptions of heaven as a place that is landscaped with clouds and in which we turn into angelic, winged individuals, all equipped with harps. But neither is the Bible. Traditional western ideas about heaven were inherited from Greek mythology.

It is much more exciting to think about God redeeming and restoring Creation to its previous perfect state. All "good" to quote Genesis' telling of the narrative of creation. I particularly like the way Wright explains it.

"We are called to live at the overlap both of heaven and earth--the earth that has yet to be fully redeemed as one day it will be--and of God's future and this world's present. We are caught on a small island near the point where these tectonic plates--heaven and earth, future and present--are scrunching themselves together. Be ready for earthquakes!" On Earth as in Heaven, page 167.
