The United Nations General Assembly declared August 9 as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is: “Honoring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being”

International Youth Day 2026 takes place on August 12, focusing on the official UN theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations." It highlights how young people globally share similar goals despite diverse local realities.

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is commemorated annually on August 23. It marks the historic uprising in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) that helped end the transatlantic slave trade.

Women's Equality Day is on August 26, marking the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibits states and the federal government from preventing women from voting. Women gained the right to vote in 1920. However, in most parts of the country, Native American, Asian American, Black women, and Latina women were largely excluded from the ballot box at the time the 19th Amendment was passed until each group gained access to voting in the succeeding decades.
