HOME IS HERE
RYSE, KA LEO, & PONO AKIONA
Wed., Nov. 30, 7:30 pm
This monthʻs HOME IS HERE visits RYSE or Residential Youth Services and Empowerment, which has been helping teens and young adults who are experiencing homelessness on O‘ahu. For 100 years, Ka Leo O Hawai‘i has served as the student-run newspaper for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. On Maui, recently crowned 2022 American Beatbox Champion, Pono Akiona is grooving to the beat of his own voice.
LOCAL PROGRAMS
On this special episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi, find out which schools produced the winning entries of the HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi 2022 Fall Challenge. (Tues., Nov. 29, 7:30 pm) For this competition, HIKI NŌ students were challenged to submit videos based on the prompt, “Where Tradition Meets Today.”

Lanai Tabura returns to our audio podcast, "What School You Went?" (Wed., Nov. 30) to talk about Kanemitsu’s Bakery and the Molokai Hot Bread Run.
New episodes of What School You Went? drop every Wednesday on pbshawaii.org or anywhere you get your podcasts, including Apple and Spotify.

Mariah Carey: Live at the Tokyo Dome (Sun., Nov. 27, 8:00 pm) is a vintage 1996 performance in Japan by the best-selling female artist of all time. The concert captures Carey belting out her huge hits like “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” and “Emotions,” along with her signature holiday song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

Elvis and the USS Arizona (Sat, Dec. 3, 8:00 pm) recounts events in 1961, when Elvis Presley returned to Hawaiʻi, a place he had grown to love, to begin shooting the movie Blue Hawaii. While on Oʻahu, the then 26-year-old King of rock'n'roll would jumpstart efforts to bring the USS Arizona Memorial, then under construction and lacking funding, to reality.

Final Thought…
In the 1980s, a young actor, comedian and beatboxer named Michael Winslow fascinated audiences around the world, showcasing his bizarre skill in the 1980s movie franchise “Police Academy.”

Winslow, who played officer Larvell Jones in all seven “Police Academy” films, was billed as "The Man with 10,000 Voices" for his ability to make realistic sounds using only his voice.

Since then, dozens have tried to mirror Winslow’s talent, but in my opinion, no one came close…until I heard a young Maui man grooving to the beat of his own voice.

On the next Home is Here, you will meet 20-year-old Pono Akiona, and hear why he is the 2022 American Beatbox Champion and on the brink of taking the world one beat at a time.
