Fulbright Specialist Professor Joe Aranha is currently completing a 6-week Fulbright Specialist assignment at the invitation of Warmadewa University in Bali, Indonesia. The project involves working with 50 students from Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Civil Engineering, as well as 10 junior lecturers drawn from four academic institutions in Bali. The project focuses on the documentation of architectural heritage. Using hand and digital drawing skills, students will spend several days conducting fieldwork to survey, measure, sketch, and photograph (at ground level and using drone aerial mapping surveying techniques) a selection of dwellings, community and sacred buildings, and traditional architectural assembly details in two villages. It will close with a public exhibition in Denpasar, Bali’s provincial capital. The exhibition will be curated by Professor Aranha.
Professor Aranha’s Fulbright assignment is significant to architectural education in Bali - Asia’s fastest-growing tourist destination. The unprecedented and rapid growth of tourism-related developments, driven more by international investment and profit and less by thoughtful comprehensive planning, is consuming traditional materials and indiscriminately appropriating traditional architectural forms. Architectural traditions for most Balinese are becoming harder to sustain. The Fulbright Specialist project at Warmadewa University is an attempt to enrich the educational experience of its students, facilitate faculty development, and bring public exposure to architectural heritage.
Professor Aranha’s involvement with traditional architecture in Bali spans several decades and includes papers, conference presentations, and entries on Balinese buildings in the Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World. This is Professor Aranha’s 2nd five-year term on the Fulbright Specialist Roster and his third project. His previous projects were in India and Mexico.

Liliana Ocon, a recent graduate of the Huckabee College of Architecture program in El Paso (HCOA-EP), was recently highlighted in a story titled "A Journey Off The Beaten Path" that was featured on the Texas Tech University (TTU) website. The story touches on the extraordinary journey Ocon made daily from Ciudad Juarez, to El Paso, Texas to earn her architecture degree from TTU. By way of our 2+2 partnership with El Paso Community College, Liliana was able to overcome barriers and transition seamlessly into the program at HCOA-EP. This partnership allowed Liliana the flexibility to complete her studies as a binational student, and eventually achieve her Bachelor of Science in Architecture.
The story also touches on the impact that family made on her journey to attaining a degree in architecture. Following her graduation from HCOA-EP, she is now focused on a new chapter in Austin, Texas, after being accepted into the University of Texas-Austin's master's program.
Liliana's inspiring story is one that resonates with so many at the HCOA and is one all members of the architecture community should read. To access the full article, click here.
