Next week, March 1-5, is Classified Staff Appreciation Week. Although we may not be in the building as of yet, our classified staff are working both on and off campus, continuing to make our school a warm and inclusive place so that it is ready for our return, and for this, we are truly grateful.
Take this week to appreciate Woodinville’s Classified Staff members. This includes kitchen staff, athletic coaches, bus drivers, custodians, instructional assistants, maintenance, office support, paraeducators, and professional technical staff.

World Language Competency Testing:
12th-Grade 2020-21 Registration Open thru March 3
In the Northshore School District you can earn high school credit in a World Language by successfully passing a World Language Competency test and demonstrating your proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You may also earn a Seal of Biliteracy on your high school diploma for demonstrating a high level of proficiency.
Since the transition to distance learning due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the District has been exploring ways to offer testing to a limited number of students while maintaining the required test security protocols, as well as following all recommended safety guidelines for students and staff administering the tests. NSD is pleased to announce our plan for testing interested Northshore 12th grade students. The testing will be online using Zoom and proctors (observers who provide direction and answer questions throughout the testing).
Registration is now open for all 12th grade students who are interested in being tested. It is important to have a firm number of students who will test in order for the District to move forward with planning.
Testing Information:
- Registration dates: February 11 – March 3, 2021
- Eligibility for registration: Northshore School District students in grade 12 ONLY. Priority will be given to students who need credits for graduation or college entrance requirements.
- Remote testing date: To be determined based on registrations received. Registered students will be contacted with more information after the close of the registration period.

Highlights from Your WHS Counseling Team:
We hope you all enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing Mid-Winter break. We enjoyed spending time with our families, playing in the snow, and catching up on our rest.
Registration update
We have enjoyed working with students during advisory time, lunch time meetings, and through zoom room discussions to plot and plan for next year's classes.
By now, students should have completed two steps of the registration process:
- Submit your course request via your StudentVue account, making sure to list the 14 class codes from your course request worksheet (found in Schoology). We love seeing that students listed alternates!
- Upload the fillable course request sheet (with your parent/guardian signature) to the registration/Specialty folder in Schoology.
If you have not completed these two steps- no worries! The registration deadline has been extended to Sunday, 2/28 at 11:59 pm. Please make sure to get your registration information submitted, as counselors will be reviewing course selections over these next few weeks and will reach out to you via email with any questions or concerns regarding your choices.

2021-22 WHS Course Registration Deadline! Current grades 9, 10, & 11 extended to Sunday, 2/28, 11:59pm

A nation-wide update by Edupoint, the company behind-the-scenes that manages our student information system, on the evening of February 24, interfered with our registration due date; therefore, the deadline has been extended.
Students currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 who were unable to enter their course requests into StudentVue OR haven't uploaded your registration worksheet in Schoology, please do so by the new deadline of Sunday, 2/28 at 11:59pm.
Once you have submitted your registration worksheet you will notice a coding system that was created to track student submissions.
0 = You have NOT checked off 14 boxes and/or your worksheet was not submitted properly
1 = You have checked off 14 boxes on your worksheet and successfully submitted your worksheet
2 = Your counselor has reviewed your submissions and has confirmed your registration for the 2021-22 school year.

We have added a page for TeenLink, The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and links to several apps that can help you deal with stress and anxiety, as well as a page with a selection of books and support for parents
Last but not least, on the Home page, you will find a video showcasing the excellent stress-reducing 5-5-5 breathing technique that Ms. Kakalecik loves and has been teaching her students during her sessions to help them de-stress. You will also find a link to important information on how to prevent cyberbullying.

Scholarship Opportunity for Young Women Age 16-19
The Zonta Club of Everett is offering scholarships for young women 16-19 years of age. These include the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship (YWPA) and our Science Technology Engineering Art and Mechanics Scholarship (STEAM).
The YWPA scholarship recognizes young women for their demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to leadership in public policy, government, and volunteer organizations.
The YWPA is a three-tiered scholarship. The Zonta Club of Everett award is $1,000 -$2,000 depending upon our fundraising success. Their application is forwarded to Zonta’s District level with an award of $1,500. The District recipient is forwarded to Zonta International where ten recipients will each receive additional awards of $4,000.
The STEAM scholarship recognizes young women who are interested in career pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Aerospace manufacturing, including welding, fabrication, machining, engineering technology, composites technology and mechatronics. This scholarship is open also to females interested in nontraditional jobs in manufacturing (even if they are unsure of what to pursue) and females interested in attending any of the certified or degree programs at AMTEC, the Advanced Manufacturing Training and Education Center, Everett, Washington.

Families are encouraged to take a few minutes to check their contact information, including phone numbers and email addresses. We use parent/guardian email addresses to create school mailing lists. The District also uses email as a tool for sharing important, and sometimes urgent, information with families. Automated phone calls are sent to families with safety and emergency messages.

Follow NSD Reopening Plan & Safety Protocols
The following plan was developed by District staff in preparation for a return to school and District buildings when it is safe to do so. The information in this handbook is intended to help everyone understand required safety protocols and know what to expect for every student and staff member. As the pandemic data and state response continue to evolve, District staff will continue to review, refine, and adjust this plan as needed. We remain grateful for their efforts.
The return to in-person learning will be most successful and have the best chance to be sustainable if we are all prepared and working together. We ask that you familiarize yourself and your students with the following health department protocols and CDC requirements.

Next week for Advisory on Tuesday and Friday, all students can schedule to meet with their advisor or advisors can request and schedule students to meet from 1:25-1:55 p.m. for support.
- Advisors will provide Zoom links for students who schedule or are requested to meet by advisors through Schoology.
- Only the students who schedule to meet or are scheduled to meet by an advisor and do not show will be marked absent.

| Service Week ~ March 1 - 5
Next week (March 1st - 5th) is ASB's annual service week! We have created a service activity for each day of the week and students are able to receive Honor Society hours during the process. Information is posted on the National Honors Society schoology page, will be announced on the WHS Honors Society instagram account, and will be sent to students through email.
The days are as follows:
Monday: Letters to senior citizens - 5 letters = 1 hr w/ 2 hr max
Tuesday: Sewing homemade masks or reading picture books - 2 masks or 2 videos = 1hr w/ 2 hr max
Wednesday: NHS Feminine Hygiene Drive - 3 large items or 6 small items = 1 hr w/ 2 hr max
Thursday: Making DIY Pet Toys or donating Pizza Boxes, egg cartons, TP roles - 3 DIY toys or 15 cardboard items = 1 hr w/ 2 hr max
Friday: Virtual letters for hospital patients - 5 letters = 1 hr w/ 2 hr max

NHS Final Hours Submission
All final hours for National Honor Society members are due by 11:59 p.m. on March 26th, 2021. Students will upload documentation of at least 20 service hours total to the assignment on the NHS Schoology page. Please remember to submit ALL service hours for the year, including a resubmission of the hours submitted at the November check.
Students who do not upload their final hours or did not meet requirements from the November check will not be considered for admission into National Honor Society for the 2021-2022 school year. (Yes, students are being inducted into NHS for next year.) Details will follow about the induction ceremony that will take place on May 20, 2021.
Students can view their "grade" on the NHS Schoology to check that they have met requirements for the year so far. There is no appeal process for not turning hours in on time or a cumulative GPA below 3.5.

Does Your Student Owe Fines or Fees?
Pursuant to NSD guidelines, notifications are mailed to homes at the end of each quarterly grading period. The fine and outstanding fee ledgers will be sent out to homes the week of February 8th. Fines and fees can always be viewed and paid online 24-hours a day through TouchBase, using your NSD generated log in information that has been given to you.

Power or Internet Outage - What To Do
We understand that weather incidents may cause a loss of power when students and staff are engaged in distance learning. Our district's Technology, Northshore Learns, and Communications teams collaborated with educators to develop a plan for notifications about power outages, access to service, and how everyone can prepare ahead of time to adjust and continue learning. Please visit our website to learn what to do if your power goes out or if your teacher's power goes out.

Winter Weather
As we enter into the winter season and the potential for inclement weather, it is important to make sure your family’s contact information is current. Families can verify contact information in ParentVUE. Please contact the WHS office today if you need help accessing ParentVUE or updating contact information.
In the event of an emergency, or if winter weather conditions impact the school schedule or affect meal distribution or Books on the Bus, families will receive a phone call, email and/or text message from the District. Information will also be posted on the District website at nsd.org and social media channels. If no information is communicated, there is no change to schedules.
As a reminder, there is detailed information on our District website if your family loses power and/or internet during distance learning due to inclement weather.

Northshore Speaks
Students, do you want to share your voice? The Northshore School District is hosting Northshore Speaks at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 29 for students and staff to share their own spoken word poetry.
Original spoken word poems submitted to Flipgrid before the end of day on Sunday, April 18, 2021 will be considered for the 2021 Northshore Speaks event. Northshore students and staff should log in to Flipgrid using their Northshore School District account. If an entry is selected, District Communications staff will connect directly with the student and their family, or the staff member. If you are a student, be sure to have your parent/guardian complete the Northshore Speaks participation form.

New E-Flyer Platform - Peachjar
We are excited to share that we have moved our e-flyer program to a platform called Peachjar. We receive many requests from local non-profit organizations to distribute program fliers. Peachjar will help facilitate the process of submitting, reviewing, approving and posting e-flyers. With the move to this platform, all e-flyers that are submitted to Peachjar will then be reviewed and approved by District staff to ensure that they meet the District guidelines. We are committed to providing access to all individuals seeking information on our District website. All submitted PDFs must meet accessibility requirements to be approved for distribution. We also encourage organizations to submit flyers in the top five languages spoken in our district.

Washington's K-12 Internet Access Program: Check Eligibility for Free Internet Access
Having reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for your student’s success during distance learning. The state recognizes this need, and has partnered with Ziply Fiber and Comcast/Xfinity to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so your student can connect to online learning from home.
This internet access opportunity will provide you with faster, stronger and more reliable connectivity than hotspots or tethering to mobile devices, which will better support your student. If eligible, your free internet access is available through June 30, 2021.

Building Our Falcon Community this School Year!
We are so excited for our students to join all the exciting clubs Woodinville has to offer. Here at WHS, students will find clubs ranging from a wide variety of interests, and WHS ASB has a lot in store for students to meet all these different clubs.
Below, through students' NSD Google account, they will find a link to a document with flyers from every Woodinville High School club. These flyers will have a brief description of each club as well how to contact said club. 2020-21 ATHLETICS REGISTRATION
Season 1 (fall) sports begin on Monday, March 1. FinalForms registration CLOSES on Monday, March 1, for all Season 1 (fall) sports. Registration is still OPEN for Season 2 (winter) and Season 3 (spring) sports.
Required PRIOR to Participation in Athletics
To participate in athletics, a FinalForms registration must be completed by both parent and student and a current sports physical must be on file with the WHS Athletic Office. Sports physicals are good for two years from the exam date.

InvestED is a 501 (c) (3) organization that provides funding to support the efforts of secondary schools throughout Washington State. They partner with 660 schools and assist more than 16,500 students with small amounts of short-term, item-specific, need-based funding – items such as shoes, coats, glasses, sports equipment, and academic fees. Their mission is to provide immediate help for students in need. Their goal is to encourage students to stay in school, return to school, or get involved within their learning community.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, our community continues to come together to assist to families and community members in need. This assistance includes childcare, employment, food, mental health support and other resources. Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!
While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?
If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application was not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account was automatically transferred to a paid account the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.
In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
- Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
- Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
- Reduced fee for sports/athletics
- Reduced fee for summer school
- Access to Backpack Program, which provides backpacks and school supplies

School Lunch Information
NSD is offering free meals for all children ages 18 and younger.
Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. NSD requires that all families wear a mask and maintain physical distancing when picking up their meals. Thank you for helping to keep our drivers and families safe.
