Seeing the World in a Different Light

Professor of History Katherine Smith studies what scholars sometimes refer to as “the long 12th century,” encompassing the social and political events from around 1050 to 1200 CE. As a member of the faculty since 2005, Smith has taught a range of classes in the History department. Arches asked Smith about the parallels between the 12th century and today, about helping students find fellowship opportunities, and about what we can learn from the study of history.

Assoc. Prof. Chris Kendall and Prof. Patrick O’Neill received the IES Abroad Faculty-Led Program Award for Nationalism & Internationalism for their joint faculty-led trip to Amsterdam.
"In a world where questions of globalization and the backlash against it are increasingly relevant, understanding the complexities of nationalism and internationalism is crucial. This program immerses students in the heart of these debates, providing them with the tools to critically engage with issues that shape our global landscape," Kendall and O'Neill said about the program.

Fluidity, Resistance, & Nuance

Kittredge Gallery is currently hosting subGrid, an art show featuring Queer artists from across the Pacific Northwest. The show, which runs through Dec. 14, is curated by Asst. Prof. of Art & Art History Mare Hirsch.
"I first came across the concept of a sub-grid in physical simulations; a type of computer programming that simulates aspects of the real world in order to better understand how they work, which in turn allow us to make predictions," says Hirsch. "To me, queerness is often a type of sub-grid. Similar to the way that sub-grid phenomena escape the resolution of computational simulations, queerness exists beyond the rigid structures of societal norms."
