Before there was Hamilton, there was Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Broadway hit, In the Heights. Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, In the Heights is the story of three days in the life of a tight-knit Latino community in Washington Heights, Manhattan. The score features hip-hop, salsa, merengue, and soul music. Before the movie version comes out this summer, see the original musical! Prep's production opens three weeks from today, on February 28 at 7:00 pm, with additional performances on February 29 at 7:00 pm and March 1 at 2:00 pm.
Don't miss seniors Noquisi Christian-Smith '20, Rowan Dwyer '20, and Griffin Rutherford '20 in their last Prep production. Urian Vasquez '21, Rafaella Mark '21, Arlise Rippel '22, Angelina Friedrichs '21, and Sophia Rivera '22 also star in the cast of 23 that includes many of our Enchantment Award-nominated students and rising stars. Get your tickets at the door. All students are admitted for free, so bring a friend!

Parent Drop-IN DAY

We look forward to welcoming parents on Parent Drop-In Day, Monday, February 10. Join your child for one or two classes or stick around for the entire day! Swing by the front foyer when you arrive to grab some coffee, say hi to a few of us, and get a copy of your child's schedule.

We typically have over 100 parents drop in and hope you are available to join us this year, even for an hour or two. No need to RSVP—just show up!
Note: If you are coming for parent drop-in day, please do not park around the circle. This area is for drop-off, pick-up, deliveries, and emergency access only. You can park in the lots on campus or across the street at the IHM.

THINK ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR

Come learn about the benefits of taking a GAP year and the many options available with Marion Taylor, owner and founder of Taylor The Gap, based in Boulder, Colorado. Marion is one of only five gap year counselors in the U.S. accredited by the Gap Year Association (GYA). Marion will be speaking at Prep on Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30 pm in the Founders’ Room. Learn how students can customize their GAP year to explore their passions. Check out www.taylorthegap.com for more information.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE

INSPIRES AND MOTIVATES

On January 27, Upper School students participated in a day-long Social Justice Conference, titled YOUth Can Change the World. Students attended two sessions in the morning led by experts in their respective fields. In the afternoon, we held screenings of multiple films related to social justice topics, followed by faculty-led discussions.
Throughout the day and at an open-mic session, students and faculty came together to share lessons, perspectives, and calls to action. Amory Malin '20 described the energy the conference generated among her peers this way:
The sessions that I went to were amazing, and I learned so much, but what I would like to point out is the conversations they inspired. During lunch on the day of the conference, some friends and I sat for 40 minutes talking about the challenges the world faces... I am so thankful that the conference allowed students to think deeply about our world and what we can do to make even our classrooms a better, and more equal, space.
Huge thanks to Coordinator of Multicultural Life Claire Romero for organizing the conference, and to Max Shapiro '23, Fionnuala Moore '23, Charlotte Thompson '22 and Atlas Power '22, who worked closely with Claire on everything from the vision to the logistics for the conference. We are so grateful to the many presenters who volunteered their time to engage our community on these important topics.

Breakthrough Profile:

SaDie Weise '17

Sadie Wiese has never been one to take a backseat when it comes to her community. Sadie was born and raised in Santa Fe and is a Santa Fe Prep alumna (class of 2017). Sadie became a Breakthrough Super Saturday teacher during her sophomore year at Prep. Breakthrough’s mission inspired Sadie, and she soon applied to teach in the summer program. She was the youngest teacher in the program during her first summer. While this was intimidating at first, Sadie’s naturally energetic and quirky personality quickly won her the affection of students and teachers alike. She taught an elective called American Espionage that focused on famous spies and CIA operations throughout history.
Breakthrough is now accepting applications for its Summer Teaching Fellowship. Learn more and apply here.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Raul Midón '84, Tuition Assistance, and Breakthrough Santa Fe on Wednesday! Midón's spectacular performance—notably his ability to play the bongos, guitar, and mouth horn at the same time—earned him a standing ovation and encore performance. In total, we raised over $24,000. YOU'RE INVITED: BOOK DISCUSSION

We will have a fun, informal evening book discussion on Wednesday, March 4 at 5:30 pm in the Library, facilitated by Jim Leonard and English teacher Doug Arnwine.

Griffin ShoutOuts

See full coverage in this front-page article from today's Santa Fe New Mexican!
Our Prep Spelling Bee winners went on to participate in the County Bee, and both did very well! Ethan Quintana de Andres '24 finished 5th. Noah Burdick '24 finished 3rd. (He finished 9th in the county in 2019.) Noah (above) will represent Prep at the State Bee in March. Congrats, Noah and Ethan!
