Criminal Justice Alumnus Dr. John Blicharz will discuss issues in crime and education, his career in higher education, as well as other career pathways.

Dr. Blicharz graduated from NJCU with an M.S. in Criminal Justice in 2016 and earned his TESOL certification from The Teachers College, Columbia University ('20) and Ph.D. in Literacy Education at St. John's University ('21). He is currently the Director of Tutoring and Academic Support Programming, also known as The Hub, at NJCU. Dr. Blicharz will discuss the importance of education and the effects of crime on education. Here, it is important to draw upon educational theories and strategies, particularly while working with underserved communities which are often affected by crime and the criminal justice system.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, the Speicher-Rubin Women's Center for Equity and Diversity, Counseling Center, Hudson Speaks Against Sexual Violence, Pride Center, and Gothic Knight Ally Safe Zone Program are hosting the "Take Back the (K)Night" event.

Take Back The Night is a global event raising awareness of and showing support for survivors and victims of sexual, relationship, and other forms of violence. All members of the University community and the public are encouraged to attend.

The exhibition, BoxingBabes & Cowgirls, showcases Gross’ most recent body of work which celebrates both real and fictitious cowgirls and women boxers as heroines. Having grown up with her father, she often watched Westerns and sport programs on television. It was only natural for Gross to pretend play as a cowboy armed with toy guns and lassos. The games lost their color as Gross realized that the worlds of Westerns and sports largely excluded women as the main players or cast them as damsels in distress.

By embracing freedom, breaking boundaries, and eschewing outdated forms of gender identity, Gross created these series out of her fantasy, memory, and research of historical and contemporary women in boxing, sharpshooting, and rodeo performance.

Gross’ colorful paintings honor these lesser-known trailblazers in American history with a unique style which combines kinetic splatters and illustrative figuration. Created from accidental coffee stains, the vividly colored and delineated splatters serve as halos or accents behind these dynamic subjects. Although the genre of illustration has often been separated from that of fine art, Gross boldly transgresses these boundaries to nullify the conventional notions of art altogether.

Brooklyn native Cheryl Gross is an illustrator, painter, writer and motion graphic artist living and working in the New York/New Jersey area. She is a professor at Pratt Institute. Her work has appeared in numerous films, TV shows, publications, and graces the walls of many corporate and museum collections including: Zebra Poetry Film Festival, Berlin, New York Times, Riverside Museum, Riverside, Ca., The Museum of The City of New York, Mississippi Museum of Art, Laforet Harajuku Museum, Tokyo, Japan, Artist-In-Residency, Kunstlerhaus, Saarbruken, Germany. Finalist Elizabeth Hulings Foundation, 2014, Artist-In-Residency Program, Dilsberg, Germany, 2015, four-time recipient Eileen Kaminsky Family Foundation Residency, Jersey City, 2018-2021, long time contributor: Broadsided Press, Art Fair 14c, Jersey City, NJ, 2021-22.

The LGBTQIA+ Support Group is open to queer and trans-identifying students who want to discuss personal and social issues in the community, gain support, and build relationships.

The support group will meet on Mondays from 3:30-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 1-2:30 p.m. during the Spring 2023 semester.

Last October, the Department of Information Technology launched an Information Security Awareness Training program to raise awareness about current cybersecurity threats and best practices that can be used to apply safeguards against them. 

The next assignment will be the 2023 Common Threats awareness training, which will show you the latest ways that bad actors can target you by using social engineering techniques, while also providing insight on defensive strategies. This training takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. 

You’ll receive an email notification from the Department of Information Technology with the email ITSecurity@njcu.edu. This will contain instructions on how to access the training.

The NJCU Spring Choral Concert will take place on Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m. in the Margaret Williams Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public. Featuring the NJCU Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Robert Prowse, the program will center around the Requiem of John Rutter. Rutter’s inspiring and uplifting music is a cross between classical and popular styles, on traditional Latin and English texts. The Concert Chorale, a student choir of 45 singers, will also perform the work as part of a massed choir at Carnegie Hall in March.

Satisfy your sweet tooth at the Ice Cream Social on Monday, April 24 from 5-8 p.m. at the Gilligan Student Union, First Floor Lobby. Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. This show has become an international phenomenon. With more than 5000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 languages.

Criminal Justice Alumnus Dr. Jason Williams will discuss his career in criminal justice research and advocacy. Dr. Williams will also share career advice. 

Dr. Jason Williams graduated from NJCU with a Master of Science in Criminal Justice in 2010. He is an Associate Professor of Justice Studies at Montclair State University where he has published criminological research in the areas of race, ethnicity, and gender. His advocacy work is in social justice. He has worked alongside the NJ Institute for Social Justice toward the passage of NJ's Restorative and Transformative Justice for Youths and Communities Pilot Program bill.

SciFi Ensemble is a string quartet with percussion, specialized in movie and video game music. It combines music and body make-up in the same show, creating a fresh, genuine, and fun experience for all audiences. An original show with exclusive arrangements and a multidisciplinary artistic team form the basis of this unique project.

SciFi Ensemble was born with the aim of making known the great compositions of both cinema and television, with a big emphasis on video game music. Showing a repertoire, with great names and high-quality scores that are not usually heard in concert.

NJCU Opera Workshop will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan Tutte (They Are All the Same!) on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. The performances will take place at NJCU’s West Side Theatre. Directed by Dr. Robert Prowse, and sung by NJCU voice students and alumni, the opera will be performed in Italian with English dialog. A favorite of the comic opera repertoire, Così fan Tutte tells the story of a pair of lovers who foolishly make a bet that their fiancées will be loyal to them, even in the face of great pressure to be unfaithful. Costumes, disguises, and outlandish plot twists ensure fun for cast and audience alike.

The NJCU Pop/R&B Ensemble will be performing a variety of songs dating from the 1960s to the present day. It's a fun and joyful concert that you won't want to miss.

The NJCU Multi-Style Strings Summer Symposium offers a unique opportunity to explore multi-style string repertoire, nontraditional techniques, different approaches to improvisation, and incorporating technology under the guidance of some of the world's leading multi-style string virtuosos and educators.
