Dear Students and Families, On behalf of campus colleagues, I am delighted to share good news regarding our final cohort of 10th and 11th grade day students. After a series of consultations and a review of our public health data, we have decided to welcome back 10th and 11th grade day students two weeks earlier than expected. We are thrilled to be in a position to make this adjustment and remain optimistic that our deliberate planning and health and safety efforts will continue to track favorably.
We were able to make this decision for a number of reasons: Our staged, deliberate reopening of campus is going very well, according to our public health indicators https://www.andover.edu/2020plan/covid-19-testing-dashboard. Dedicated colleagues who are executing plans daily, including teams in residential life, academics, facilities, dining, and student support, believe we are in a position to accommodate more students, sooner, and in a safe manner.
Of course, this step requires that we remain vigilant in upholding all health and safety protocols and abiding by our non sibi pledge. All students will continue to receive regular reminders on these expectations from the deans and medical staff.
An earlier than expected arrival means that 10th and 11th grade day students may register this weekend (October 10 and 11) and will be tested for COVID-19 at that time. Arrival information, including registration and testing schedules, will be forthcoming. Once students are cleared to be on campus, they may take part in afternoon and evening activities and meals. An email will follow shortly with details about sports, study spaces, music, dance, and other options.
As we move forward with this shift in plan, the health and safety of our entire campus community remains paramount. To this end, we will be increasing the frequency of testing for ALL students—day and boarding—to twice weekly beginning Monday, October 12. This will allow us to better monitor community health and means that all students will be tested each Monday and again on either Thursday or Friday. More details will be forthcoming. Compliance with the new twice-weekly testing schedule is mandatory. Any student who does not fulfill this responsibility will be in violation of our non sibi pledge.
We trust that every adult and student will use common sense and follow the guidance of our governor and medical director and adhere to the public health principles we expect of our community both on and off campus.
We have asked for extraordinary patience from day students, in particular, and know that many are missing direct interaction with their friends and teachers. We are excited to welcome 10th and 11th grade day students to campus—earlier than expected—and look forward to seeing you all very soon.
Sincerely,
Raynard Kington, MD, PhD, P’24 Head of School
