"Recruitment and enrollment remain key challenges in behavioral lifestyle trials—especially among people newly diagnosed with cancer and initiating chemotherapy. To better understand what motivates participation during this critical phase, we interviewed 29 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who enrolled in a nutrition and physical activity intervention delivered during and after chemotherapy. We identified 4 major themes related to participants motivation to participate in a lifestyle trial during active cancer treatment: 1) Altruism – Many participants were motivated to participate by a desire to contribute to research that could benefit others, including future patients and family members facing a similar diagnosis; 2) Proactivity – Women valued the opportunity to gain knowledge and take an active role in preventing or managing chemotherapy-related side effects; 3) Low perceived risk – Healthy eating and exercise were viewed as beneficial with minimal downside; and 4) Oncologist endorsement – A recommendation from a clinical provider served as a strong source of validation to enroll. These findings highlight the importance of aligning intervention recruitment strategies with patient motivations. Doing so may improve enrollment in lifestyle interventions delivered early in the cancer care continuum."
