Current PhD Candidate Joe Baez Challenges Prevailing Narratives around Body Image, Stigma, and Self-Love |
|

|
For our last newsletter of 2024, we highlight current Ph.D. candidate Joe Baez, who is nearing the completion of her dissertation, “‘Blessed Are the Hot, Fat Girls’: The Art of Stigma Refiguration.” The work challenges prevailing narratives around body image, stigma, and self-love, particularly for fat women and femmes of color who face intersecting stigmas of racism, misogyny, and fatphobia.
Baez argues against conventional self-love discourse and the pressures to lose weight, instead exploring how artists can teach us to navigate and transform these stigmas. Her dissertation highlights several influential figures, including TikToker Jools LeBron, photographer Laura Aguilar, blogger and multimedia artist Mark Aguhar, poet Yesika Salgado, social media influencer TS Madison Hinton, and musician Lizzo. Baez describes her dissertation as a love letter to these figures who inspired her to love and accept her fat, femme, Dominican body and have provided strategies for working through shame and stigma.
To complement her dissertation, Joe is working on a creative project titled "The Interludes." The project incorporates audio, photography, and video to discuss topics outside of the focus of each chapter of the dissertation. Topics include reflections while engaging the archive, life during and after writing each chapter, and the inspiration for writing about each artist. “The Interludes” is an endeavor to illustrate just how much representation matters, and that these stories can be a part of the process of knowledge production.
Baez's first peer-reviewed publication is scheduled to appear in Spring 2025. Based on the first chapter of her dissertation, Joe’s essay, “Neither “Before,” Nor “After”: Fat Ambivalence in Laura Aguilar’s Body (of Work),” will be published in Hemisphere: Visual Culture of the Americas for their sixteenth volume on “Science, Medicine, and the Visual Arts in Dialogue.”
