Academic Success Center Offers Students Tutoring, Coaching, Workshops, and Resources |
The Academic Success Center aims to provide essential resources to promote academic success in every student. It provides tutoring and academic coaching to a wide range of disciplines.
Their mission is to “Meet students where they are in the learning process and empower them to achieve academic success.” They do this by offering services to every Bearkat and providing resources ranging from academic recovery, coaching, and tutoring that cover more than 60 different courses. They offer tutoring services in person and virtually. The academic recovery team also offers Time management, accountability, and study skills training to help students who participate in their programs.
Samantha Rubolino, a lead learning coach in the Academic Success Center, states “The Academic Success Center at SHSU aims to propel its students through their academic journey with academic assistance in the form of tutoring and coaching endeavors.” This program is a wonderful asset that is open to all students. To quote Dr. Ted Stuberfield, the tutoring director, “We strive to meet every Bearkat where they are in the learning process to help them achieve academic success. Our programs and initiatives provide support and resources within a welcoming environment where students can further build their learning skills to navigate the college experience.”

"I’m so excited to be interning with a non profit press over the fall semester in their fundraising and grant writing program, thanks to the experience I got at NBF (National Book Foundation). The staff at NBF was so attentive and helpful about teaching us things and letting us shadow them in areas we were interested in."

| Dr. Brian Jordan Delivers Keynote Eulogy
|
"I had no real idea what to expect and what emotions to feel. It was the most overwhelming thing I've ever done. To see the remains, hold them, and be responsible for speaking for them. Playing a small part in that is incredibly humbling. I feel a deep sense of responsibility and a sense of duty to tell their stories."

2024 France Study Abroad Recap |
|
"Our program took place in Aix-en-Provence, France, and it was an incredible experience for both the students and myself. One of the most memorable moments was seeing the students’ growth in confidence as they navigated the French language and culture.
A particularly touching memory was when one of my students, Brennan, mentioned how learning French inspired them to stay in France after the program ended to explore more opportunities. Moments like these truly showcase the transformative power of language education.
We also enjoyed excursions to nearby historical sites, participated in local music festivals, and even had a chance to take a French cooking class, where we learned to make traditional Provençal dishes. My students were fully immersed in the language and culture, which really brought our classroom lessons to life."
- Dr. Mariam Akoto

Distinguished Alumni, Chris Tritico, Discusses the Importance of Alumni |
“Never forget the university that did so much for you. The alumni association is only as strong as the active members. Our university has one of the best and is the most affordable alumni association in Texas. We can keep it that way by our active dues paying members. A strong and active alumnus makes the university better for all the students.”
- Chris Tritico

CHSS Sees an Increase in ACE-Designated Courses
|
CHSS is excited to share that we have received an outstanding sixteen applications for new ACE-designated courses in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). These applications represent a substantial increase from the typical three to four new ACE courses per academic year.
The heightened interest among faculty members can be attributed to the significant investment in the ACE Workshops, which have played a pivotal role in guiding faculty to design an ACE component for their courses. Notably, this year's workshop saw participation from representatives of every department in CHSS, underscoring the growing enthusiasm for community engagement initiatives.
Thank you to our faculty members' remarkable commitment to enriching student learning through community engagement.
