Open House: Activities Fair & Curriculum Night Thursday, September 22 Thank you for joining us!
| |
|
WHS Families,
Last night's Curriculum Night was a HUGE success in so many ways, including our ongoing Pass The Hat Fundraiser, which in one single night made over $10,800! What a great start! Thank you to all those who gave online or wrote checks or found cash in your wallet! Amazing!!
This annual fundraiser IS NOT OVER! Please if you missed your chance last night, know that you can still donate (and/or become a member) ANYTIME. The easiest and fastest way: use the QR codes below or visit our website!
This year's Pass The Hat has currently raised $14,500 for the year. All the money raised goes directly to teachers/staff and benefits all our WHS students. Our goal is $20,000 so we are ~70% of the way there!
Remember: the more you give, the more grant requests we can fund during the year. We already have grant requests totaling $12,000 in the first two weeks of school and we don't want to turn any of them down!
On behalf of the WHS PTSA, thank you so much for your support and Go Falcons!

Dates you need to know:
Yearbook Sales ($55.00): *Sale Time Three: Nov 28-Dec 16, this is the last opportunity for you to guarantee the purchase of a 2023 Yearbook. Online or in-person at the main/cashier's office.
Grad Ads: Each year parents opt to purchase some space in the yearbook to congratulate their senior. There are full, half, quarter and eighth page ads for sale. Everything is done online, you upload photos, create your ad and pay for your ad through Balfour website. I will send the link, instructions and information in late October. This will be available Nov. 1 through Dec. 16th.
Senior Photos: These will be due on Thursday Oct. 27. Traditionally at WHS we allow the seniors to turn in a “nice” picture. This is to replace the ASB ID photo taken during Falcon Days. This is completely optional and not meant to cause any Senior stress. These photos can be taken with your phone, at Grandma’s Farm in Wisconsin next to the duck pond or professionally it is entirely up to you. We want to invite all seniors to turn in a “nice” photo of themselves to be used in the Senior Portrait section. My yearbook staff is also available to take a “nice” photo for the senior, free of charge and we will share the photos with the senior if they want to use them for anything else.

Attendance Updates for 2022-23
Student IDs Required for Late Arrivals
Students arriving late MUST scan their free WHS student ID cards or have their StudentVUE App open at the Attendance Office to receive their late arrival pass as we move to a new system this school year. The Attendance Office will have an iPad where students will scan their student WHS student ID cards to receive their printed pass to take to class with them.
If your student does not have their WHS student ID card or a phone to login to their StudentVUE account, they will have the ability to login to StudentVUE on the iPad at the Attendance Office.
Thank you for reminding your student to come prepared and ready to show their WHS student ID card when when arriving late to school to help keep things moving quickly.
Daily Attendance Notifications
Families are now receiving the daily attendance notifications for tardies as well as absences throughout the school day. We ask that your students show up before school begins so teachers can maximize class time with limited interruptions once the bell rings. Please be sure that your students plan ahead for potential traffic or construction on their way to school so they can safely get to school, parked and get seated in their first class of the day before the bell rings.

Attendance News & Changes for Early Dismissals
Our student day is from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and WHS expects all students to attend school every day. Below are a few highlights of our attendance policy and procedures:
- Absences must be excused within two (2) school days of the absence or students will be assigned progressive discipline.
- When a student accumulates three (3) or more days of unexcused absences it will result in a conference with administration.
- If a student misses more than 15 minutes of class, it is considered an absence.
- If a student requires an early dismissal, the student needs to come to the Attendance Office before school or during Options with a parent/guardian signed request. We are no longer accepting phone calls or emails for early dismissal to limit classroom interruptions.
- Students who arrive late to school (both excused and unexcused) must check in at the Attendance Office for a pass before proceeding to class. Please read about the new late arrival policy where students are REQUIRED to bring their Student ID cards to sign in late.

WHS celebrates five Falcons who earned academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Program!
Congratulations to the students below who are each one of 62,000 students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs!
Joyinolu, Nicolas, Mya, Rudy, and Aleksie earned this recognition by having a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year, and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year.
College Board National Recognition Programs academic honors can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups through College Board’s Student Search Service.
This academic honor was accomplished during an immensely demanding period of their high school career. We couldn't be more delighted to share this great news!
Congratulations to Joyinolu, Nicolas, Mya, Rudy, and Aleksie!

Reduced or Waived Fees 2022-23 $$$$$$$$ Available after August 15 by logging into ParentVue and completing the steps in the Student Information Updates module
***Step-by-step instructions on how to submit the consent form in ParentVUE can be found in .pdf HERE. An electronic step-by-step guide is also available on the district website.***
Please note: Part of the process when completing the consent form is families will first verify their information (address, phone, emergency contacts, etc.). The Consent form will appear after the race and preferred language questions. Parents/Guardians need to go through each page and verify information before reaching the consent form. The ParentVUE app on cell phones looks nearly identical to the computer version of ParentVUE for completing the online consent form.
If you qualify for free or reduced price meals, also apply for reduced or waived extra-curricular school fees pursuant to House Bill 1660 (that you may be eligible for) by completing that section of the Student Information Updates in ParentVue* on or after August 15 (see House Bill 1660 details below).
Completing the fee waiver form in ParentVUE* will allow your student's free and reduced status to be shared with those administering extra-curricular activities at our school or within the district, thus being able to waive or reduce certain fees.
Consent must be given each school year and does not carry forward from last school year. Instructions on how to submit the consent form in ParentVUE can be found on the district website.
Once the Consent is submitted through the Student Information Updates portal in ParentVUE, it takes a minimum of 24 hours for the waived fees to show up in TouchBase.
Visit the District website to learn how to apply for free or reduced price meals.

| From the WHS Health Room
COVID Updates:
The Washington State Department of Health has provided new guidance for schools this Fall. Please review the Symptom and Exposure Flowchart for Schools and learn about the Northshore School District's COVID information on our Health Room website so you are prepared for the school year. You'll find details about what to do if your child has:
- Symptoms,
- If your child is exposed to COVID,
- What kind of test your child should have,
- What to do if your child tests positive, and
- How you will be notified of COVID cases at school.
Other Illnesses:
To avoid the spread of illness other than COVID, follow these guidelines when deciding whether your child is healthy enough for school. In addition to the COVID guidelines, if your child has any of the symptoms below, please keep him/her at home until the symptoms subside:
- APPEARANCE/BEHAVIOR: unusually tired, difficult to wake, pale, skin rash, lack of appetite; these are often signs of underlying illness.
- FEVER: temperature of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours
- VOMITING/DIARRHEA: within the past 24 hours.
- RASH: Any rash of unknown cause should be considered contagious. Please have your child examined by a health care provider to determine the cause and communicability of the rash before sending him/her to school. The school may require a note from the health care provider stating that the rash is not contagious.
- Other: For other specific diseases or health difficulties it is always a good idea to contact the school nurse. We are happy to share information and resources anytime!
Students must be fever-free without fever reducing medication and no vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
Medications at School:
If your student will be taking any medication at school, please contact the school nurse. The Northshore School District recommends that medication be taken at home whenever possible. We recognize, however, that in some cases it is essential that medication be administered during the school day. Learn about the procedures for the handling of ALL medications in the schools, as well as find the authorization form, on our Health Room website.
Please do not put any kind of medicine, including Tylenol, vitamins, and cough drops in your child's lunch box, backpack or pockets. Unidentified medicine can never be given at school.
Please feel free to contact us at any time to discuss health concerns about your student.
