CLASS ME-MENTOS  Students in geology professor Jeff Tepper’s Igneous Petrology/Volcanology class conducted a socially distanced “explosive volcanism” lab on campus last week. “Dropping Mentos candies into carbonated drinks triggers impressive soda eruptions,” Tepper says. The class experimented with different variables, such as the size of the bottle, the amount of carbonation, etc., which serve as proxies for geologic factors, like the size of the magma body and gas content, that influence volcanic eruptions.
