Brown and Haley Lectures explore education and scholarship in the digital age. Scholar and author Tressie McMillan Cottom, assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University, will deliver two lectures this week as part of the Brown and Haley Lecture Series. The first lecture, "Lessons from Lower Ed: Expanding Education and Addressing Inequality," will be held at 7 p.m., Oct. 18, in Kilworth Memorial Chapel. The second, "Being a 21st-Century Scholar in the Digital Age," will be at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 19, in the Tahoma Room. Both lectures are free and open to the public. Earth, Wind, and Fire to perform—wait, no. Guest artist performance inspired by earth, air, fire, water, and aether. The multimedia concert, The Elements, is a mix of contemporary and classical music, video, digital animation, and more by music ensemble TORCH and artist Scott Kolbo, and features a composition inspired by the five elements. The performance begins Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m., in Schneebeck Concert Hall. Admission: $10 faculty/staff; free for Puget Sound students. Get your tickets now at tickets.pugetsound.edu.

BE PROUD noteworthy accomplishments
Renee Houston, experiential learning and civic scholarship, and Alana Hentges, Career and Employment Services, traveled to St. Petersburg, Fla., to present Puget Sound’s Summer Fellowship Internship model, "Summer Immersion Internships: A Model of Community and Curricular Innovation,” at the National Society for Experiential Education Annual Conference in September. Heather White, religious studies and gender and queer studies, delivered the public lecture, "Religion and Gay Liberation in 1970s New York," at the Toronto School of Theology. The lecture was sponsored by the Reynolds Fund of the Toronto School of Theology and the Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College.
