A Voice for Students

Archie Kerr ’27 is a rising senior and the incoming president of the Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound (ASUPS). Originally from Bend, Oregon, Kerr previously served as vice president and as director of clubs and student interests. Kerr’s dynamic interest in law, politics, theory, and education informs his nuanced approach to the challenges of ASUPS leadership. Minnie Jellinek ’27 sat down with Kerr to talk about Puget Sound’s decision-making processes, renovations, student perception, and everything in between.

Redirected Risk

Alumnus Eli Pockell-Wilson ’26 has published a report on the Uyghur Human Rights Project's website. While studying at Puget Sound, Pockell-Wilson worked for the UHRP as a research associate with support from an Asian Studies grant. The report, titled “Redirected Risk: Uyghur Forced Labor and the Enforcement Gap in Australia and Japan,” examines how Australia and Japan's reliance on voluntary compliance, rather than import bans, allows goods produced by Uyghur forced labor to reach their markets even as countries like the U.S. step up their enforcement.

“I'm proud that the grant helped make this work possible, and I think it's a nice example of how a Puget Sound education and funding can translate into real policy research during and after graduation,” Pockell-Wilson said.

Mind the Gap

Prof. of Economics Garrett Milam was quoted in the The News Tribune in an article about the City of Tacoma's $40 million budget deficit and the strategies it could employ to close the gap. One idea is to try to work with labor unions to lower the city's healthcare costs.

"If there’s rising healthcare costs, there’s two ways to approach it: You can eat it, or you can have more of a share paid by your employees,” Milam said.
