2023 started with the big move from Century Avenue campus to the New Bund campus, making Shanghai's Qiantan neighborhood our new home. After three years of COVID disruptions, the NYU Shanghai community was raring to go. 

As China welcomed in the Year of the Rabbit, students moved into their new dorms at Jingyao Residence Hall and the spring semester began at the New Bund campus. Three faculty members received tenure and everyone got used to their new surroundings in Qiantan neighborhood. A new approach to controlling thermal convection was proposed by NYU Shanghai researchers. 

NYU Shanghai kicked off its 10th anniversary celebrations, with a ceremony and a number of events, including celebratory performances. Alums converged on campus for the University's first alumni reunion and NYU Shanghai awarded its first PhD in Chemistry. The New Bund campus hosted NYU Shanghai's first consulting case competition and career fair, a two-day conference explored healthy aging from a variety of perspectives, and Human Resources hosted a conference on HR in international education. 

NYU Shanghai welcomed US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns to campus. A mini course platform was launched, TEDXNYUShanghai shared stories of self-discovery and resilience, and NYU Shanghai students learned how to step up and be allies. NYU Shanghai hosted its first postdoctoral and doctoral research assembly and a postdoctoral job fair. A faculty, staff and student-led panel highlighted the diverse perspectives of adoptees. The library got everyone talking about generative AI. NYU Shanghai's tennis team won 1st place in tennis women's singles at the 17th Shanghai Games (FUSS Tennis Tournament). A new study was published exploring how the brain changes and learns. 

The Class of 2023 tossed their graduation caps at a commencement ceremony featuring speaker Ambassador Cui Tiankai. 186 PhD and Master's degree candidates graduated in NYU Shanghai's fourth graduate convocation. Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek co-curated an exhibition at the ICA. The University community celebrated student-led research at an undergraduate research symposium. Physicists took the temperature of fluid flows and discovered a new role for turbulence.

IMA Low Res graduate students displayed their interactive works at their thesis show. Staff, faculty and students participated in local Dragon Boat Festival festivities at nearby Sanlin Old Town. 

Over the summer, NYU Shanghai welcomed kids to campus as part of the College and Career Lab (NYUSH CCL), a summer camp for children of migrant workers in Shanghai. The campus also hosted a summer camp for first year doctoral students from all NYU campuses and another week-long summer school exploring the challenge of climate change on the global economy. CASER held a symposium to honor the 20th anniversary of the Chinese General Social Survey. 

More than 400 members of the Class of 2027 arrived on campus as first-year students and participated in a week-long orientation. NYU Shanghai welcomed Nasir Memon as Interim Dean of Computer Science, Data Science, and Engineering, Pierre Tarrès as Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives, and David Atwill as Dean of Arts and Sciences. Everyone enjoyed the end of summer vibes at the Qilin Fest. US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo toured campus on her visit to China.

NYU President Linda Mills visited on her listening tour of NYU campuses, and new faculty and study away students arrived on campus. Three faculty members were honored for winning Teaching Excellence Awards. Scholars and researchers visited campus as part of a program on US-China relations and for a symposium on Sino-Indo cultural interactions. The Reality Show returned with an in-person performance. NYU Shanghai scientists published research on the "earworm phenomenon," nickelate superconductors, and corporate social responsibility.

NYU President Linda Mills was inaugurated as NYU's 17th president. Turing Award winner John Hopcroft visited campus. Historian Tansen Sen was awarded an NEA grant. The New Bund campus won a LEED gold certification. The Carnival of Terror brought spooky Halloween vibes to campus. China’s first adaptive mountain bike was built in two days at the New Bund campus. Students competed in the inaugural Qilin Cup. CASER hosted a thought-provoking event exploring the transformation of Americans’ social attitudes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Nobel Prize laureate Robert Engle visited campus and spoke with students. IMB launched a mentorship series on work and life. Student research was in the spotlight at the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Researchers gathered for a symposium on neuroscience of speech and language. NYU Shanghai kicked off its second Digital Innovation Challenge. Millennium Fellows hosted a Social Impact Forum. The Trash Fashion Show highlighted student sustainable design and innovation. NYU Shanghai community members and their family and friends enjoyed a fun fall day at the campus Farnival. 

Students' talents shone brightly at the end of semester shows. Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka visited campus. Research showed how urban planning that takes into account climate change can lower rising urban temperatures, and a strong social support network can act as a protective shield against depression.
