To the UMass Boston Community,
UMass Boston is closely monitoring the outbreak of the monkeypox virus. Like our approach to managing the coronavirus pandemic, the university is adhering to the relevant guidance from health authorities. We are taking a proactive, preventative approach to address the monkeypox outbreak.
From the first reports of monkeypox, University Health Services (UHS) has focused on its potential spread and developed an appropriate clinical protocol for this disease. All UHS clinicians have completed appropriate training courses on the diagnosis and treatment of monkeypox, and clinical and infection control protocols have been created in case the virus is suspected or identified on campus. Testing is available at UHS, and results are available generally within 24 hours. UHS is working with Fenway Health to make referrals for vaccination and care as clinically appropriate.
In addition, UHS has posted informational frequently asked questions (FAQs) on its website and has educational materials available at its Quinn Administration Building second-floor location. For those who believe they may be at risk and would like additional guidance, please contact UHS at 617.287.5660.
In keeping with UMass Boston’s long-standing ethic of care, UHS has engaged in a messaging campaign aimed at disseminating information without stigmatizing the most at-risk population, using direct messaging, social media, table events, and other platforms. We would like to urge all members of our community to stand in solidarity and recognize the risk for stigma and discrimination related to monkeypox and to reject any stigmatizing words or actions related to this specific virus.

Sincerely,
Karen Ferrer-Muñiz, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
