This first engaging session will focus on perennials, during which we’ll address your questions about these flowers, favorite perennials, and more!  Register Now Explore Gardens History The Carillon Housed at the top of the Chimes Tower is a 62-bell carillon, an original vision of Pierre S. du Pont. Mr. du Pont constructed the 61-foot-tall stone tower in 1929 after seeing a similar structure in France, including the largest set of tower chimes (totaling 25 tubular chimes) he could purchase. Mr. du Pont even installed a switch in the Peirce-du Pont House so he could activate the chimes from his residence. A year after his death, the original chimes were replaced with an electric carillon in 1955. The electric carillon was used for daytime and evening shows through the 1980s. In January 2001, Longwood closed the Chimes Tower to renovate the structure for a new 62-bell carillon. The roof was removed, the bells and frame were assembled then lifted in by crane, and a new concrete roof was installed. Since May 2001, the bells have played tunes to mark the time throughout the day, in addition to live concerts. Goldenrod and Joe-Pye Weed are popping up in the Meadow Garden, Mexican sunflowers and dahlias are lining our iconic Flower Garden Walk, and our Conservatory is playing host to dozens of brilliantly blooming waterlilies.  Explore What’s in Bloom  Time to Plant Join Us in Growing for Harvest 2020  Longwood is proud to support the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Harvest 2020 program—a collaborative of gardeners, neighbors, and friends growing food this harvest season for themselves and their communities, in the effort to address growing hunger and food insecurity in the Philadelphia region. To date, Longwood has grown and donated almost 1,700 pounds of food to the local community. We welcome you to join us in this very important effort, just in time for the fall planting season. Completed in 1927, this spectacular garden is similar to one seen by the du Ponts at the Villa Gamberaia near Florence, Italy. This week, enjoy a walk down memory lane from Member Kathy H.: The Meadow has always been a place of solitude and self-reflection during my long walks. I was drawn to these butterflies which reminded me of my three sons who grew up enjoying the beauty of Longwood Gardens. They recently sent a video thanking me for encouraging them to pursue their passions and dreams which lead them to Los Angeles and Montreal ... so far from Kennett Square.
