Backlash: China's Struggle for Hegemony in Eurasia on January 1. The book, co-authored with Bradley Jardine (Wilson Center), will be published by Oxford University Press in 2025. Based on over a decade of research and three years of fieldwork in Central Asia, the book will examine China's rising role on its Western frontier, particularly its expanding role in Central Asian security. But the rise of China has been met with protests and growing Sinophobia. Based on over 200 interviews, opinion poll data and an original protest dataset, Backlash tracks the drivers of this Sinophobia and how it is shaping China's ability to project power in the region. Finally, it will examine how China is adapting its approaches to dampen the effects of pushback.
