A RISING STAR AMONG US Felicitaciones, Esther! Those who have crossed paths with Esther Claros-Berlioz know about her committed advocacy for inclusive education, and particularly for the education of the youth and the most vulnerable. Joining the YWCA Leadership Program was the perfect opportunity for her to expand her advocacy, knowledge, passion, and social justice activism. It was at the same time, a great opportunity for her to share her powerful talents as an educator, as a social justice artist, as a Latina Leader in Ohio, and beyond. In October 2017, Esther received a well deserved recognition as a one of the YWCA Rising Stars, and was selected to participate in the YWCA 2018 Leadership Program. Rising Stars is "an award that recognizes younger professional women for their leadership qualities and potential to attain career achievement." Ms. Sally Gutierrez, Academy of Career Women of Achievement Member, submitted the nomination on our behalf. She was highly impressed by Esther's leadership achievements as a young professional, highlighted by those that sustained her nomination. The Center for American and World Cultures wants to thank our colleagues that supported her nomination: Ricardo Averbach, Stephanie Danker, Karla Guinigundo, and Jacqueline Rioja Velarde. The Leadership Program graduation celebration was hosted by the YWCA in Cincinnati, Ohio on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Please help us to congratulate Esther Claros-Berlioz for her outstanding achievements and her courage to lead and to empower others. Love and Honor!
Throughout my tenure in this country, and especially over the last three years, I would not have been able to make it to this point in my professional, academic, and personal life without the constellation of fierce mentors and friends–many of whom are women–that have inspired, nurtured, and encouraged me. As a member of the 2018, Rising Star Leadership program, it is my honor and privilege to continue to "Lift as we climb" and further the mission of the YWCA in helping eliminate racism, empowering women, and standing up for social justice.
–Esther Claros-Berlioz Esther Claros-Berlioz is a doctoral candidate in the Educational Leadership - Leadership, Culture, and Curriculum program. Originally from Honduras, she came to the United States for college to pursue her dream of studying abroad in the USA. Her research interests include immigration reform and how it affects Latino and Latin American youth, the use of art as resistance and the biopolitics of immigration. She has received a variety of recognitions in her career. Among them, one of the most recent was the Distinguished Women of Color Award from the Women's Center at Miami University.

CAWC Accolades
The HERS Institute is a competitively-selected Leadership Development Institute for Women in Higher Education. Since 1976, the curriculum covers general leadership principles, higher education trends, change management, budgets and financial statements, career planning, legal issues, inclusive excellence, and fundraising. Sessions are taught by professional practitioners and leaders in their fields, as well as campus administrators. As part of the HERS Institute, participants are required to complete a leadership project related to their role at the Institution, and to engage in introspection and skill development surrounding their own leadership roles and identity as a leader. Jacqueline currently is working on the development of a pilot project to assess co-curricular modalities and priorities with focus on global learning and intercultural engagement. She has been selected to participate in the Fall 2018 CTE Faculty Learning Community on Experiential Learning where she will explore opportunities to develop a collaborative methodology to integrate co-curricular experiential learning programs as part of the pilot project. Miami University’s faculty and staff that have participated in the HERS Institute in the past currently play a key role on our campus, and are committed to advancing inclusive excellence in the organizational structure across the institution. As a HERS Institute Alumna, participants are connected to 5,000 alumnae across higher education administration, staff, and faculty from across the United States.
Jacque lives and exhibits a global, intercultural mindset–embracing lifelong learning and growth and deeply enriching the lives of others. We are so pleased she was selected for the HERS institute and look forward to her continued leadership, inclusive engagement, and global perspective.
