Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
November 2020
Dear Volunteers,
Thank goodness for the beautiful weather last month — a lot of perfect days to be in the Garden! We also had great volunteer turnout, with 105 active volunteers helping in all aspects of Garden operations, and nearly 80 volunteers working alongside our horticulture team to get the collections in good shape going into winter.
Below are details about opportunities to volunteer this fall, greeting and engaging visitors through the holidays, and assisting with a Virtual Wreathmaking Workshop.
Finally, I want to remind everyone that since June, we have been using a NEW system to sign up for volunteer shifts. You can access Volunteer Central by visiting sfbg.org/volunteer, and clicking the "Active Volunteer" button.
Volunteer with Virtual Wreathmaking!
For this year's wreathmaking workshop, participants are offered the opportunity to pick up a pre-packed bundle of material, or to "shop" the selection of material gathered from the Garden.

Volunteer help is needed for the following:
1) Set-up, including sorting and breaking down material, and creating bundles. Sign up here.
  • Thursday, Dec. 10, 10am-1pm and 2-4pm
  • Friday, Dec. 11, 10am-1pm and 2-4pm
2) Bundle Pick-up — distributing bundles to visitors. Sign up here.
  • Friday, Dec. 11, 4-6pm
  • Saturday, Dec. 12, 10-2pm
3) On-site selection and pick-up. Tasks include checking in participants, managing materials, plus set up and breakdown as needed. Sign up here.
  • Saturday, Dec. 12, 10am-2:30pm
Click here to view the calendar-  be sure to look for "Wreathmaking" shifts in December. You may also RSVP directly to me at cwieland@sfbg.org.
Greet Visitors on Holidays & Weekends!
Welcome Table
Look for Welcome Table shifts on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on holiday weekdays.
This is an excellent way to welcome all visitors, especially those who might be coming to the Garden for the first time. Volunteers who speak Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and Tagalog are particularly encouraged to sign up.
Note that volunteers will be seated behind a plexiglass shield.

Rovers
Roving is fun! Spend a few hours connecting with visitors in the Garden and exploring the collections as they change through the seasons.
You must have completed one session of docent or children's walk guide training before signing up as a Rover.
Horticulture Volunteer Schedule
The Green Team(s) will take a few breaks this winter to accommodate holidays and seasonal changes.
Thanksgiving Break: 11/22-11/29
Winter Break: 12/13- 1/10

Community Volunteer Days
Thank you to the 15 volunteers who participated in our community workdays this fall, and to those of you who sent friends to join us for the day. It was fun to have new and familiar faces help with these projects in the Celebration Garden, along MLK, Jr. Drive, and in the Southeast Asian Cloud Forest, and yes, I was fortunate to be out there too!
Slices of Joy
  • Docents welcomed Sean Privett from the Cape Province, South Africa for a talk on plants of the fynbos, many of which exist in the Garden's collection. You can find his talk and other enrichments here.
  • SF Symphony is performing 1:1 concerts in the Celebration Garden this month. Click here if you'd like to enter the lottery to receive an invitation to participate.
  • Are you looking for a way to hone your observation skills and spend more time outside? Consider participating in our Nature Journaling Club, led by a volunteer guide. The group currently meets on 2nd and 4th Mondays, at noon.  No experience necessary, but visit this website to learn more about nature journaling. Contact me for more details and to join.
  • The Bookstore is now OPEN on weekends. Pick up some new books and meet Whitney Ochoa, our new Bookstore Manager.
It's been great to meet new folks and see volunteers who haven't been able to be active in a while. We hope everyone is staying well during this challenging time and look forward to seeing you at the Garden soon!

Best,
Chloe
