Race & Law Colloquium Looks at Critical Immigration Theory
Associate Dean for Equity & Inclusion Kathleen Kim will join Professor Priscilla Ocen's Race & Law Colloquium series at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3 to discuss the critical intersectional approach to immigration law undertaken in Feminist Judgments: Immigration Law Opinions Rewritten, a forthcoming book to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2022, co-edited with Professors Kevin Lapp of LLS and Jennifer Lee of Temple Law. Kim explains: "The new Biden administration promised humanitarian treatment of immigrants at the border. Yet, contradictory actions show egregious abuses of government power and torture against Haitians seeking refuge in the U.S. recalling the anti-Black racism that informed this country’s first immigration laws. Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers continue to subject Central and Latin American immigrant families to prolonged detention in restrictive and overcrowded settings including military bases and Trump-era tent sites. These examples underscore the fiction that a new presidential administration can 'fix' this country’s immigration system. Federal immigration enforcement, even if inhumane and/or discriminatory, is justified by a canon of immigration jurisprudence that prioritizes the exclusion of noncitizens of color under the pretext of national security."
