February District Leader Newsletter

Dear District Leader,

We truly appreciate the work you do each day to give students across the country the chance to build their confidence and share their story. We couldn't do it without you!

Share Your Perspective on Public Forum Rules

In 2019, the Board of Directors voted to pilot new speech times and revised language surrounding Grand Crossfire and paraphrasing in PF. We are collecting coach feedback on these pilot rules to assist the Board in determining whether these rules have been beneficial for the community. To weigh in, please visit our forum on NSDA Connect, select Coaching Central, and choose the thread.

Earn Citations for the Work You Do Daily

Some of the work you do as district leaders can help you earn special awards! Coaches who perform service for the NSDA, such as hosting tournaments, writing or presenting about the Association, recruiting a new chapter school, or writing an article for Rostrum, earn service citations, which contribute to Don Crabtree Distinguished Service Awards. To enter citations, log in to your NSDA Account and click View next to Service Citations.
“I think service is one of the single most important things we have to do—more than just coaching your own kids and worrying about your own team. Service is how this organization grows stronger. And you gain so much from that as well.” - Don Crabtree, Former NSDA Board President, Nine-Diamond Coach, Hall of Fame Member, and Service Citation Record Holder

District Finance is Fun

Earlier this month Laura Stein, our Director of Business and Finance, hosted a Districts Finance is Fun webinar. If you missed it, you can view accompanying resources from the webinar, plus instructions are also available in your District Leader Toolkit. Please email any questions regarding district finance to Laura at laura.stein@speechanddebate.org

Recommended Roles at the District Tournament

Offering new coaches a role at your tournament can be a great way to generate buy in and encourage them to commit to attending! We have compiled a list of suggested tab staff positions broken up by recommended experience level. This guide can serve as a resource as you strive to recruit a tab staff who represents the full range of diverse voices and viewpoints in your district.

Mission Moment

What you do as coaches and district leaders helps us build a diverse community committed to empowering students through competitive speech and debate. Thank you for helping Courtney and 140,000 other students across the country uncover their confidence and find their voices.
