"In my graduate course, we integrated AI tools like Boodle and @claude35 Sonnet to significantly enhance and streamline the literature review process for student research papers. By leveraging AI, we aimed to reduce the time students spend on research while increasing the depth and quality of their analyses. Here’s how we did it:
-
Automated Literature Search — Leveraging AI to quickly identify relevant research papers and sources, allowing students to uncover connections between peer-reviewed studies and related fields.
- Text Summarization — Utilizing AI to generate concise summaries, making it easier for students to extract the main points from dense academic texts.
-
Content Categorization — Helping students efficiently organize their literature reviews by categorizing key themes and topics.
- Trend Analysis — Analyzing publications and keywords to identify emerging trends, which enabled students to position their research within current academic conversations.
By incorporating these AI-driven techniques, students were able to enhance their literature reviews, focus on critical analysis, and gain deeper insights into their research areas."

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND ATTRIBUTION
Use of AI beyond the brainstorm of ideas should include citations and references. When showing or presenting images or other content you generated using an AI-tool, cite that image or content following the APA style guide. Submitting AI-generated work as your own without proper attribution is a violation of academic integrity policies. Properly cite AI contributions in your work as follows:

| AI Trivia: AI Learning from Mistakes: Modern AI systems use a method called reinforcement learning, where they improve their performance by learning from mistakes, much like humans do after repeated trials.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVES: AI IN HIGHER EDUCATION
A recent study conducted by researchers at San Diego State University, titled “I Don’t Want to Be Taught and Graded by a Robot”: Student-Teacher Relations in the Age of Generative AI," explores evolving student opinions on the role of AI in higher education. Authors Elisa Sobo, David Goldberg, Sean Hauze, Abir Mohamed, Colin Ro and James P. Frazee provide insights into how generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping the student-teacher relationship in both promising and challenging ways.
Key Insights
- Benefits of AI in Learning:
- GenAI can personalize learning experiences, tailoring content to meet individual student needs.
-
It fosters innovative teaching techniques, helping instructors engage students in new, interactive ways.
- Concerns and Challenges:
- Many students express discomfort with the idea of AI involvement in teaching and grading, fearing a loss of human connection.
-
There's an increasing concern over AI’s role in facilitating academic dishonesty, presenting new challenges for upholding academic integrity.
In each issue, we aim to shed light on current discussions and research shaping the future of AI in education, including how it impacts our teaching approaches and the student experience. This SDSU study serves as a vital touchpoint for understanding student expectations and anxieties regarding AI, prompting us to reflect on how we balance AI’s capabilities with the human elements of learning.
