YSU Launches Swipe Out Hunger Program
YSU’s new Swipe Out Hunger program provides residential students with meal plans an opportunity to donate unused meal swipes to assist students in need.
A university collaborative effort spearheaded by YSU’s Student Government Association came to fruition last month. At the annual Friendsgiving event, residents not only had the opportunity to Swipe In for a full Thanksgiving dinner—they also had the opportunity to Swipe Out Hunger by donating any quantity of their unused meal swipes for the week to a Meal Swipe Bank. In total, 265 meals were donated at the event. These donated meal swipes will then be passed along to YSU students in need, allowing them to swipe in for a meal at Christman Dining Commons using their YSU ID.
The Meal Swipe Bank will be managed by the Office of Student Advocacy and Support (SAS). Students can apply for access to these meal swipes by completing this application. Upon receiving the application, SAS will work in collaboration with Auxiliary Services to have meal swipes added to a student’s account. Once added, the student can swipe in at Christman Dining Commons during any of the meal service periods for an all you care to eat meal.
Moving forward, there will be designated Swipe Out Hunger Donation Days each semester to continue to add to the Meal Swipe Bank. Supplemental support for the Swipe Out Hunger Meal Swipe Bank is provided by Chartwells, YSU’s dining services provider. Individuals interested in making a monetary donation in support of Swipe Out Hunger may do so through the YSU Foundation. Please indicate SGA Food Pantry/ Swipe Out Hunger in the Gift Details section.
In 2016, YSU Student Government Association established the SGA Food Pantry to support students facing food insecurity. In 2020, SGA joined forces with Student Advocacy and Support to expand the services of the pantry, providing critical support to students during the pandemic. In collaboration, the two departments are able to provide year-round support through this service, now known as the Penguin Pantry. Swipe Out Hunger is the next step in providing ongoing support to YSU students. Questions about the Penguin Pantry or Swipe Out Hunger can be directed to Nicholas Koupiaris, Student Government Association President (nakoupiaris@student.ysu.edu) or Dean of Students Dr. Nicole Kent-Strollo (nkentstrollo@ysu.edu).
