Born Educator
Academia is in Steven Neshyba’s DNA. The son of an oceanographer, the chemistry professor recalls that dinner table conversations while he was growing up were always very intellectual. “My father ... did a lot of work in the Arctic and the Antarctic, so when he brought that home, that kind of got into my blood,” he says. Neshyba’s research centers on ice, specifically ice in clouds, and how global warming is changing the makeup of that ice. In the classroom, he has received attention for his “class flipping” approach to teaching, which challenges traditional higher education models. We sat down with him to talk about this approach to learning, his research, and how the field of chemistry is changing.

HACKS & CHOPS Professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies Eric Orlin was the featured speaker at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences Department of Classical Studies department colloquium. His talk, “The Carmen Saeculare: Prayer and Performance,” examined Horace’s hymn as not merely a song, poem, or prayer in the Augustan literary tradition, but as a piece explicitly designed to be performed in front of a human audience.

Writing Marathon
On Monday, Dec. 6, and Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 10 p.m., in Upper Marshall Hall, peer writing advisors from the Center for Writing and Learning will be available to meet with students. Do you have a big paper or project coming due? Get feedback on your draft. No appointments necessary; advising will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who arrive before 10 p.m. are guaranteed a meeting.

JAZZ MASTER MASTER CLASS Grammy-winning trombonist, composer, and producer Delfaeyo Marsalis joined the Puget Sound Jazz Orchestra, led by Tracy Knoop, director, for rehearsal last week, prior to a holiday concert. The performance, held Nov. 30, at the Blue Mouse theater, featured local vocalists Maureen Parker and Paige Hansen of KNKX Tacoma Radio, as well as voice performance major Eli Kitchens ’22.
