Recently, I was the guest of
The Dorchester in London and spent the evening with world renowned expert alchemist Giuliano Morandin. Giuliano has been with The Dorchester for over 33 years and he and his team have won awards too numerous to count. Giuliano guided me through a maze of incredible cocktails including: The Martinez- created by the legendary bartender O.H. Byron in 1884 and is considered to be the prototype of both the Martini and the Manhattan. The Dorchester of London Martini- originally created by The Dorchester's legendary bartender Harry Craddock, during the roaring 30's. The Perfect 10- created by Giuliano Morandin himself in quest of the perfect classic martini. Her Magesty's Cup- a homage to Her Majesty on her Diamond Jubiliee, and we finished with The Cassanova- which was a refreshing concoction of Prosecco, Aperol, Creme de Peche, Strawberry and fresh basil leaves. The morning after Giuliano's Mixolgy tour, one is in need of a hearty breakfast. The Dorchester is the setting for the opening scene of SOLO- the new James Bond book by international bestselling author William Boyd, in which 007 is described as treating himself to a 45th birthday breakfast in 1969. In the book, Bond’s breakfast at The Dorchester consists of “four eggs, scrambled with pepper sprinkled on top, half a dozen rashers of unsmoked bacon, well done, on the side and a long draught of strong black coffee”. While you're eating breakfast, you are presented with an IPOD so that you may listen to the audio version of the book. As if that weren't enough, upon departure, you'll receive a hard copy of SOLO which is yours to keep!
