CSE STATEMENT ON TENNESSEE NAEP RESULTS
New NAEP Scores Show Continued Need for Education Intervention in Tennessee
Memphis, Tennessee - Campaign for School Equity's executive director, Mendell Grinter released the followed statement in resposne to today’s release of 2017 National Assessment for Education Progress (NAEP) results.
"The state of Tennessee has made great advancements in its educational landscape with the development of the Achievement School District (ASD), the passage of the Individualized Education Act, an increase in the number of college credits attained among high school students, and an increase in the state’s graduation rate. Yet, there is still more work to be done; Alarming disparities still exist across the state in academic achievement, particularly for students of color.
Though we remain optimistic about the potential for students across the state to continue making academic gains as seen in the past, it’s important that we acknowledge that we still have a ways to go, and to act with urgency to reduce disparities and improve education equity and access for all students. CSE also recognizes the need to continue supporting interventions, innovation and school turnaround strategies that work, while enhancing focus on areas for improvement.
Our forthcoming 2018 State of Equity Report will highlight these areas and mirror our advocacy agenda for the upcoming year. Stay engaged with us as we forge ahead to advocate for equity in schools and higher achievement rates for all students."

Tennessee NAEP Overview: 4th Grade MATH PROFICIENCY or ABOVE
In 2017, only 36% of 4th graders in Tennessee scored at or above the NAEP proficient level - 20% for students here in Shelby County.
4th Grade READING PROFICIENCY OR ABOVE
In 2017, only 31% of 4th graders in Tennessee scored at or above the NAEP proficient level - 16% for students here in Shelby County.
8th Grade MATH PROFICIENCY or ABOVE
In 2017, only 29% of 8th graders in Tennessee scored at or above the NAEP proficient level - 12% for students here in Shelby County.
8th Grade READING PROFICIENCY or ABOVE
In 2017, only 31% of 8th graders in Tennessee scored at or above the NAEP proficient level - 17% for students here in Shelby County.
