Partnering to support your student's success
| |
Our Family Guide is both a source of campus news (there are really cool things happening here)
and a resource to help your student flourish at Denison. Ultimately, we want to help your student take control and build their own unique experience — and we know your partnership is essential to making that happen.

Helping Your First-Year Student Connect |
After orientation winds down, it is normal for first-year students to still be looking for a group to connect with. Here are some strategies to help your students continue to build connections on campus:
Get Involved: With hundreds of performances and lectures presented on campus each year, students have many options. There are 160+ student organizations including arts, club sports, religious and spiritual life, service.
Attend Athletic Events: Remind your students to cheer on our athletic teams. Students receive free admission to games and events. In addition, Denison sponsors tailgates at many of these events.
Here are some upcoming events to encourage your first-year student to attend:
-
First-Year Fridays: Opportunities to connect with other first-year students
- Sept. 12: First-Year Volleyball Tailgate
- Sept. 18: Creating Connections: an event designed to help first-years meet others through 1-on-1 conversations
- Sept. 25: Pre-Orientation Reunion: a time to gather with their Pre-o group
-
Connect Trips to the Earthworks (Sept. 17) or Columbus Clippers Baseball Game (Sept. 23)
As your student begins to settle into classes, we also want them to feel connected to their faculty and course material. Encourage them to visit faculty office hours and utilize campus resources. Consider asking them about the strategies they are using to stay organized and manage time to ensure they are turning their work in on time and preparing themselves to engage in class discussions.

Launching for Professional Success
One of the many strengths of a Denison education is the myriad opportunities for students to gain skills, experiences, and networks that help them to launch successfully after graduation. In fact, we were just named #3 in the U.S. for the best career services, a testament to how we prepare students for professional success. From our Red Frame Lab to the Knowlton Center and Denison Edge to the Lisska Center, this fall is filled with many of those opportunities, and we share them with you in hopes that you’ll have a conversation with your student about how they might engage in one or more of these opportunities this month.

ReMix Entrepreneurship Summit (Sept. 20-22) |
ReMix brings together 150 alumni and students for 3 days of sessions and networking around innovation and entrepreneurship. It’s a fantastic way for your student to explore post-Denison pathways and engage with alumni. Encourage your student to register today.
Knowlton Center’s Journey Program (Oct. 13-15) |
We encourage every student to take advantage of the Knowlton Center’s Journey Program, which prompts students to pause, reflect, and imagine the type of life they want to lead post-graduation and to build clarity around what they might want to do with their career. Encourage your student to sign up for the next Journey opportunity.
| Lisska Center's Debate & Dialogue |
The Lisska Center for Intellectual Engagement hosts opportunities for students to engage in debate and dialogue. Two upcoming opportunities include a Sept. 19 Debate & Discourse and a Sept. 27 Minds Wide Open Conversation on climate change.
Additional Career Resources |
Stay up to date on career workshops, employer visits, internship opportunities, and more by signing up to receive a digest version of the Career Community Newsletter(s) that students in Career Communities receive every Tuesday.
Please also encourage your student to join a Career Community! As your student discovers more about their career interests, they can join a Career Community where they will have access to industry-specific resources, opportunities, and connections for all students, regardless of academic focus.
