Director's Message
NanoHealth
I am very excited to announce the completion of Phase 1 for our NanoHealth initiative. We are now ready to embark on Phase 2 and launch the Sydney NanoHealth Network where co-chairs are empowered to lead a wave of change within their respective clusters to explore the translational outcomes. The overarching aim is to make this Network of clusters a flagship for the University that will shape research activities to attract external funding and enhance research capacity. Through collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and commercial research partners, we expect to create and enhance sovereign industry, increase our clinician translation activities, and ultimately achieve better health outcomes. Please read about our NanoHealth journey so far in the “Sydney NanoHealth Network” article below.
New Scoping Groups
I’ve recently been having conversations with many of my University colleagues on the theme of disruption as a positive force for change. This led me to reflect on the question, “Are we a disruptor at Sydney Nano?” and my answer to it is “Yes”. With a disruptive innovation lens, we can advance a shift in expectations and behaviours to accomplish our mission where research meets innovation. This shift helps Sydney Nano leverage and congregate multidisciplinary research groups from all areas of the University to steer the evolution of new solutions over time to address the many challenges that face our society in the decades ahead.
As every innovation starts with discovery research, the greatest impact that Sydney Nano can have is to tap into the University’s social fabric to bring together the wealth of capabilities we have to develop translational pathways. With this in mind, Sydney Nano is introducing two new scoping groups for potential additional networks in the Smart Sustainable Buildings and Defence & Aerospace sectors. We are calling for members to join these scoping groups by Expression of Interest. Please complete an EoI form for
Smart Sustainable Buildings here or for
Defence & Aerospace here, with a closing date for both being Friday 13 November 2020.
We will be launching the Sydney NanoHealth Network and other new initiatives at the Sydney Nano town hall for our internal community next week. I hope you can join us on zoom.
Congratulations!
Finally I’d like to congratulate Prof Thomas Maschmeyer for winning the Prime Minister's Prize for Innovation 2020; Prof Anita Ho-Baillie for securing federal funding for her solar energy research; the ACWA team led by Prof Chiara Neto and Prof Martijn de Sterke for winning the Bridge Hub 2020 Water Challenge; A/Prof Ivan Kassal and Prof Michael Kassiou for their RACI Awards, and the JSSL team for their Honorable Mention at the dmi:Design Value Awards.
