Support for Our Community in a Time of Conflict
As a law school with alumni and programs that span the globe, we are acutely aware of the ongoing conflict in the Southern Caucasus between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians and the impact it is having on people both within those regions and the greater LLS community. We hope for commitment to a lasting cease-fire and meaningful dialogue to achieve peace for the people of Artsakh. We also condemn the violence touching so many in the region.
“As home to the Center for the Study of Law & Genocide, International Human Rights Center and other programs devoted to the study and pursuit of global justice, it is incumbent on us to reflect and assess what is happening beyond our borders,” said Dean Michael Waterstone. “The current tensions abroad are directly touching our students, alumni, faculty and staff, making this moment even more painful. As such, we encourage empathy on the parts of all members of our community in navigating these trying times.”
A range of wellness resources are available to members of the LLS community, including:
Additionally, spiritual counseling is available from LLS Campus Ministry. Fr. Wayne Negrete, S.J., recently offered: “Let us remember in prayer the souls of those who lost their life and those who were injured in the current conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Let us pray for a ceasefire, a de-escalation of tensions, and for negotiations for a peaceful and just resolution.”
For those looking for information about the conflict, LLS units have contributed helpful resources:
