Longwood Reimagined Update
|
This week, our talented horticulturists and facilities team began installing plants into the Cascade Garden, now housed in a beautiful new 3,800 sq. ft. glasshouse. Designed by Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994), the Cascade Garden is the only intact garden design in North America by the acclaimed designer. We preserved and reconstructed this garden—stone by stone—and we are honored to have worked with a team of scholars, landscape architects, preservation experts, and the Burle Marx Landscape Design Studio to do so.
Inspired by an equatorial coastal rainforest, the Cascade Garden reflects the beauty of Brazil’s native flora and landscapes. In all, 1,500 plants from 180 taxa, including the bromeliad (Bromeliaceae) and aroid (Araceae) families, will call this garden home. We are working on installing plants on the vertical structures of the garden first, here planting the colorful and eye-catching Aechmea blanchettiana ‘Wally Berg’. We will be busily planting for the next week in preparation for sharing this—and all of Longwood Reimagined—with you during our Member previews beginning November 3.

Bulb Plantings for Spring
|
Even though it’s autumn here in the Gardens, we’re already getting ready for spring—which means that we’ll soon be planting bulbs in preparation for next year’s spring display. We’ll begin this month in such areas as our Flower Garden Walk and Flower Garden Drive so they can grow roots into winter and bring with them much-welcome color after the winter season.
