Ed Martin

Message from the Associate Vice-President and Director of Extension

Several changes are occurring within Extension. We did an economic analysis and a needs assessment, and soon, we will begin to develop a Strategic Positioning Plan. We are also hiring new faculty and staff and continuing to provide our support for our current team.

With all these moving parts, it's nice to have a few "go-to" people within the system to have those conversations to get some input, discuss some concerns, and simply check in to help keep us all centered. I have several. They are my mentors, my colleagues, people I trust to give me some advice and who I know care enough about me and our work to tell me how they see it. Some of them I've known for years, others for much, much less. Some are faculty, but many are staff. I would hope everyone in Extension has co-workers like this. It's not people to complain with or people to confirm rumors and innuendoes. It isn't easy to put into words, but they are people whose opinions I value, friendships I cherish, and support I appreciate. If you don't have a group like this, work to get one.

After 32 years at the UA, seeing all that I have seen, I still need a few folks to lean on, and it's nice to know that they're there for me – and I'm here for them too

Arizona Farm Bureau Honors AZMet

The Arizona Farm Bureau recently presented its 2023 Environmental Stewardship Award to the Arizona Meteorological Network for AZMet’s work measuring wind speeds across the Yuma agricultural valley.

AZMet records two-minute sustained wind speeds at all 30 network stations and makes the data available through a new data preview and download tool or by using the ‘azmetr’ R package. The work allows much broader wind speed measurement than was previously possible. Jeremy Weiss, AZMet Program Manager, received the award on behalf of AZMet during the Service to Agriculture Awards Banquet at the 102nd Annual Convention of the Arizona Farm Bureau.

Scott White, AZMet Research Professional in charge of field operations, reprogrammed station software and tested new code to ensure quality measurements before deploying it to the network stations. Matt Harmon, Senior Web Developer with ALVSCE who recently redesigned the AZMet data system, adapted the system to bring in and store the new data.

Artificial Insemination Clinic - Camp Verde

Artifical insemination has been shown to improve the genetic quality of a herd, increase consistency and value to a calf crop, eliminate the need to purchase, house, and feed a full bull battery, shorten breeding and calving season, and generally improve the profitability of a livestock production operation.

If you are interested in adding an AI program into your livestock operation, please join us for our 2.5-day AI Clinic at our UA Experimental Ranch, V Bar V, near Camp Verde November 17-19, 2023. Our experienced staff will guide you through the entire AI process and will include hands-on practice including live animals. Cost is $800, first-come basis, non-refundable, and includes a take-home AI kit ($350 value), AI manual, flash drive with all the presentations, and lunch on Sat. and BBQ on Sunday. Registration is limited to 12 participants.

Please contact Sierra Sheeks at the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension Office, (928) 445-6590. For further questions, please contact Andrew Brischke (928) 753-3788 or brischke@cals.arizona.edu
