Sixty-one years ago on October 11, 1962, the Second Vatican Council opened in Rome, bringing together Catholic bishops and men and women of goodwill from all over the world. The diversity of races, cultures and languages was unprecedented in the history of the Church, and the work of renewal and inclusion, begun on that day, continues down to this very day.

And in these weeks of October, the Synod on Synodality is taking place in Rome. 363 delegates from across the world will be voting in this "16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops," and 54 of the voting delegates are women. This will mark the first time that lay men and women will take their place as full voting delegates at a synod of the Catholic Church.

It is purposely held the day before World Food Day to highlight the role played by rural women in food production and food security.
- October 16: World Food Day. Since 1979, this worldwide event has sought to increase awareness, understanding, and informed year-round action to alleviate hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. Review campus resources here.
- October 17: Black Poetry Day, observed annually. This day honors past and present black poets. Jupiter Hammon, the first published black poet in the United States, was born in Long Island, New York, on October 17, 1711. In honor of Hammon's birth, we celebrate the contributions of all African Americans to poetry.
