WISE Interfaith Pre-Orientation: Peer Mentor Applications Open Now for Undergraduate Students
Application Deadline: Sunday, February 25, 2024
Interested in engaging with diverse spiritual traditions? Looking to have deep conversations and build strong connections? Apply to be a WISE Peer Mentor and guide first-year students in a five-day interfaith pre-orientation program designed to build deep community, grapple with contemporary issues through an interfaith lens, and engage with a multitude of spiritual communities at Emory and in Atlanta. We welcome applications from all religious, non-religious, spiritual, and ethical identities.
Peer Mentors receive a $600 stipend, enjoy covered delicious meals, transportation during the program, and early move-in.
During the program, participants will:
- Explore Atlanta and the Emory campus through visits to vibrant religious and philosophical
- communities and service and social justice organizations
- Grow your religious and philosophical literacy skills by experiencing different spiritual practices and meeting leaders from different background
- Build leadership skills through workshops and small-group discussion
- Connect with other students and build long-lasting friendship
- Enjoy fun activities such as outdoor barbeques, campus scavenger hunts, and more

Soul Food Gospel Fest

Emory's Office of Spiritual and Religious Life and Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir will be hosting Soul Food Gospel Fest on Sunday, February 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the Emory Student Center Multipurpose Rooms.
Soul Food Gospel Fest is an event designed to bring together various groups in the community and to celebrate the love of Jesus and Black History Month. There will be gospel music from various gospel choirs from around Georgia, liturgical dance, spoken word, trivia, and games. Soul food and refreshments will also be served. February Is Islam Awareness Month: Muslim Call to Prayer

This call to prayer announces the time for Jumu'ah prayers, the weekly communal prayer held on Fridays at 1:55 p.m. in Cannon Chapel. The call to prayer is a general statement of Islamic belief and a summons to prayer, traditionally recited from mosque minarets five times a day.

Beloved Community Lenten Practices: From The Rev. Maddie Henderson Herlong, Christian Chaplain
The season of Lent is a season of fasting and preparing our hearts for Holy Week, culminating in Easter. Lent began as a season of preparation for those who would be baptized on Easter. Through prayer and fasting, they prepared both their body and soul for the sacrament of baptism. Today, we follow in this tradition by fasting or taking on a practice from Ash Wednesday through Good Friday. These 40 days (not counting Sundays) are a time to repent and turn our hearts to God.
I invite you to consider a practice for this season. Above are some examples of practices and some resources for you. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me at mhend25@emory.edu.

International Community Friday Lunch: Lunar New Year

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
This gathering extends a warm welcome and builds community for international students and scholars over a free lunch. Attendees will also meet sponsors who will share helpful campus resources.

The LifeStyle Assessment and Monastics Alzheimer's Study
Wednesday, Feburary 21, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Zoom.
What can we learn from monastic lifestyle with respect to aging and neurodegenerative diseases? In this talk, Tenzin Namdul will present an interdisciplinary study that investigates low incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) among Tibetan monks.
This study explores associations between monastic lifestyle and cognitive resilience to identify what sociocultural factors, particularly contemplative practices, could provide insights into ways to potentially prevent or slow the onset of ADRDs. Register here.

McDonald Lecture: “Kenosis and Sunyata: Jesus Christ in Interfaith Context”

Hee-Soo Jung, resident bishop of the Wisconsin Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church, is Candler’s 2023-2024 Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on The Life and Teachings of Jesus and Their Impact on Culture. Jung will present public in-person lectures that are free and open to the public with registration required. The first is Wednesday, February 28, “Kenosis and Sunyata: Jesus Christ in Interfaith Context,” 11:00 a.m.–12:45 p.m. Register here. A grab and go lunch will be available in Brooks Commons following the lecture. This lecture will focus on Jesus as encountered in interreligious dialogues between Buddhism and Christianity.

27th Annual Tenenbaum Famly Lecture: Latinx Jews in Their Adopted Homeland: Constructing New Realities and Claiming New Identities

Dr. Laura Limonic asks, “How do Latinx Jews in the U.S. identify? Can they choose their identity or is it assigned to them? Are their ethnic choices ever strategic or instrumental?” Drawing on the experiences of Latinx Jewish immigrants in the United States, the historical roots of Jewish migration streams to Latin America and a sociological comparative perspective, Limonic will discuss how group construction is never static, and, in particular, how race, religion, and class are increasingly important mediating factors in defining ethnicity and ethnic identity.

Emory MSA: Hot Halal
Hot Halal includes a delicious catered halal lunch buffet consisting of entrées, sides, desserts, and beverages. This is a great opportunity to not only enjoy a delicious halal meal, but is also a great bonding opportunity with Muslims at Emory.
There must be at least 24 people to sign up for the meal plan to show enough interest to continue hot halal for the year. Signing up for hot halal requires our community to commit to it for the semester. The meal plan is $100 for 8 three-course meals (discounted from $178) for enrolled students. We will have hot halal from February through May (excluding Ramadan), tentative dates shown below. It is a great deal for anyone who frequently attends the Jummah prayer and would like to enjoy really good food after the prayer for a great price. If you cannot attend the prayer, you can still get the food to eat between your schedule or you can donate it to another student.
These are all the dates Hot Halal will likely be served: 2/2 (tentative), 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/1, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3 (reserved date). Learn more and sign up here.

Bayit House Applications Open
The Emory Bayit House provides its residents with more than a Jewish experience - it fosters a dynamic student-led environment that allows Jewish students to practice Kashrut, Shabbat, holidays, and other customs with ease while fostering a warm community committed to a pluralistic Jewish lifestyle.
For the upcoming academic year, the house is open to all students interested in living at Emory Bayit.
Application opens January 29. Priority deadline: February 9 and then rolling after that.

Ethics and Student Leadership: Summer Internships
The Servant Leadership internship program is a funded summer internship program that provides students with a supervised opportunity to work with Atlanta-area nonprofits in a wide-variety of fields. This internship program is designed to enrich the student's life and integrate the practical, intellectual, and spiritual components of work while deepening understandings of responsibility, service, and vocation. Students receive a stipend of between $2,000 and $4,000.
Application deadline is March 4, 2024 by 5:00 p.m.

Sojourners Fellowship
Sojourners is a Christian media and advocacy organization that works towards social and racial justice, inspiring people of faith through its award-winning magazine and digital media and through its mobilizing initiative, SojoAction.
They offer a year-long fellowship that invites participants to engage in community living, spiritual exploration, and professional development. The deadline to apply is March 8.

Touching the Earth

Touching the Earth is a three-week immersion For young adults. Now in its fourth year, Touching the Earth offers young adults (ages 18-25) an opportunity to pause, to engage in a sustained period of contemplation in a community of peers and mentors, and to reflect on values and callings.

Conversation Circle: Earth and Climate Chaplaincy
Feburary 2024 - August 2024 online.
The BTS Center, in collaboration with the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab, offers four new opportunities for chaplains committed to working at the intersection of Earth, climate change, and spiritual care to be in ongoing conversation with one another, sharing experiences, offering support, and seeking inspiration for their ongoing work.
Conversation Circles are comprised of participants from diverse sectors and geographic locations, and are guided by two trained chaplain facilitators. Circles meet 12 times over the course of 6 months. Sessions are offered on the Zoom video-conferencing platform.

Emory Interfaith Center Open Hours
The Emory Intefaith Center is a place for worship, prayer, meditation, and retreat on campus for Emory's diverse spiritual communities that also fosters interfaith engagement, education, dialogue, service, and social justice work. It is a home away from home for Emory's diverse spiritual communities, as well as a gateway between the campus and the Atlanta community and world beyond.
The center encompasses spacious and flexible sacred spaces, community and meeting rooms for hospitality, gatherings, studying, and retreats, as well as nearby offices for Emory's multifaith chaplaincy staff, interns, and student workers.
Hours of operation:
