On May 19 the Catholic church celebrates the feast of Pentecost, which brings the Easter season to a close. Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the early Christian community. In that sense it can be said to be the birthday of the church and the source of its mandate to spread the gospel. Pentecost is also a day in which Catholic Christians celebrate the many manifestations of the Spirit within the church, the source of the community’s ongoing life and diversity.
