» History In The Making: Honorees at Wednesday's (11/5) 48th Annual CMA Awards were breaking records throughout the night. Miranda Lambert not only led the count with four trophies, she received an unparalleled fifth consecutive Female Vocalist award. Husband Blake Shelton's fifth Male Vocalist trophy tied him with Vince Gill and George Strait for the most consecutive wins, and Luke Bryan's first CMA award was a big one: Entertainer of the Year. Mac McAnally was a record-breaker, too, with his seventh consecutive Musician of the Year win. Vince Gill was only the second artist ever and fifth person overall to receive the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence, which was awarded to Johnny Cash in 2003. See the full list of winners here. If you missed it, watch the show in its entirety and sort through various highlights here. |
» Quotebook: Seen and heard onstage and backstage Wednesday (11/5): - "How do you even compute that your first CMA award is for [Entertainer]? I have longed and sought ... for many years, to get one of these in my hands. I can't help but, in the back of my mind, want some of that respect from this body of people. I'm just really humbled ... I will never take a second of it for granted." –Luke Bryan.
- "Can I hug you again?" –Bryan to Garth Brooks while accepting Entertainer.
- "We're all doing this together, but I definitely feel like girls do have a lot to say. [We] were represented really well tonight. Country music appreciates women." –Female Vocalist and Album honoree Miranda Lambert.
- "To be where I'm at in my career this far into it and have it be ... I'm not going to say the later part of my career, because f*ck that. I hope this is like the second quarter." –Blake Shelton on five consecutive Male trophies.
- "My all-time hero has never won one of these so I want to dedicate this award to [him], Earl Thomas Conley." –Shelton.
- "I know something y'all don't know. Suck it, TMZ." –Brad Paisley on revealing Carrie Underwood is having a boy.
- "Do you think [Garth] will sign my baby?" –Underwood.
- "For this, I've gotta do something really crazy." –New Artist Brett Eldredge on coming up with a celebration that can top skydiving and shark-swimming.
- "There's a lady in the shoe department at Nordstrom and she expects big things every time we go on awards shows. She says, 'What are y'all gonna do next?' Country music fans are the best and we just want to give them something exciting." –Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild on their "Day Drinking" production.
- "I admire so much how you treat each other, your generation of artistry, the camaraderie that you have ... It's a beautiful thing to watch." –Vince Gill accepting the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence.
- "It's 9 1/2 feet tall and anatomically correct." –Gill on the statue of himself in his hometown.
- "Do you know what this means for country music? This award means so much because our genre was built on simple, good songs about real life." –Kacey Musgraves on "Follow Your Arrow" winning Song.
- "For a song I was told could never and would never be a single, it just blows my mind. It gives me a lot of faith that people still love connecting with a message. It's an anthem for all kinds of people. I could not be more proud." –Musgraves.

» Out Of The Woods: "If you ever want to come back, there's a seat for you," CMA Awards host Brad Paisley said during Wednesday's show (11/5), but Taylor Swift is doing just fine as a pop artist – despite some doubters. Her new album 1989 sold 1,287,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And Swift feels vindicated. "I was told to keep my expectations low because album sales were in decline, no one had sold over a million albums this year and the last time it happened on release week was with my album Red in 2012," she says. "I was told my optimism was naive. I was told it was risky to change creative directions. I was told my album wouldn't sell if it didn't have my entire face on it. I listened to my intuition instead of all those voices. I'm so proud that my fans were able to show the world that art is important and is still valuable to them." The album scored the most sales in a week for any artist since 2002, with copies selling at the rate of one every two seconds. In these parts, that's called a good, old-fashioned country butt-whuppin'. |
