MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Yongsun Paik, Ph.D.
Greetings! I am happy to report that LMU CIBE continued to serve its mission as a resource center to support international business education during the second half of 2023. In celebration of Cybersecurity Month in October and International Education Week in November, we organized webinars on cybersecurity and the impact of technology on global human resource management.
For spring 2024, we are planning conferences and webinars featuring the key themes of LMU CIBE: global entrepreneurship, creative marketing, and sustainability. The Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB) South Korea program will be offered again on June 22-30 to enrich the experience of those attending the Academy of International Business (AIB) Annual Meeting in Seoul, South Korea, scheduled for July 2-6. We hope you’ll be able to join us for these programs and look forward to your continued support of LMU CIBE.
Finally, I’d like to share an important piece of news with you. Marki Jones, LMU CIBE’s program management director, has left LMU to join the University of South Carolina as director of its Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). She has been an integral part of LMU CIBE, as well as the Center for Asian Business, for the past two decades and made a remarkable contribution to improving the reputation of LMU CBA. We wish her the very best in her future endeavors. Jennifer Tyler and Hugo Rodriguez have taken over Marki’s job, and will work with me in writing a new chapter of LMU CIBE.

Future of U.S. - Korea Alliance
CIBE co-sponsored a webinar with the Center for Asian Business titled "70 Years of the U.S. - Republic of Korea Alliance: Current State and Future Prospects" featuring Andrew Yeo and Troy Stangerone. Yeo and Stangerone discussed the U.S.-Korea alliance as it stands at a crossroads and as the two countries advance into a more global and comprehensive strategic alliance. They also explored the current state and future prospects of the partnership in terms of security, socio-political, and economic cooperation. "There was a terrific summit meeting in April 2023 between the presidents of the United States and South Korea," said Yeo. "And I do think overall the alliance is in a very healthy state in its 70th anniversary, but there's going to be more work ahead.”

Growth of DigitalizationIn this webinar, Kevin Klowden and Jonathan Woetzel explored the driving forces behind the digitalization of the Asian economy and how we can encourage the same growth in the U.S., including more investment in digital infrastructure and more pathways for students in STEM. When asked how to manage the risk of the technological revolution to individuals, both agreed that we have to focus on job creation. To stay ahead in the digital economy, Klowden said the U.S. needs "to create opportunities and ensure [those opportunities] are there for the next generation." The webinar was co-sponsored by the Center the Asian Business (CAB) and moderated by Yongsun Paik, director of LMU CIBE and CAB.
