Lucy Institute announces 2024-2026 Lucy Graduate Scholars

The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society has announced the third cohort of Lucy Graduate Scholars.
The 2024-2026 Scholars will join the 2023-2025 Scholars cohort to conduct data science and artificial intelligence research and create professional development and education opportunities. During the two-year program, they receive mentorship from Institute faculty and staff as they seek to advance interdisciplinary and co-innovative graduate student research. This year’s cohort includes students from across five different departments and programs.

The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and Notre Dame Learning at the University of Notre Dame are partnering to seek candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in responsible AI for education.
Responsibilities will include developing resources to help faculty and students adapt to teaching and learning in the age of AI tools, designing AI-enhanced pedagogical strategies, and contributing to the ethical use guidelines for AI in education.

This course has three main learning goals: 1) identify critical events that influenced the rise of AI and align them with the history of related scientific disciplines; 2) describe the various phases of AI's evolution and context and discuss their influence in present discussions; and, 3) reflect on AI's ethical/societal implications and critique current/possible applications.

Join Matthew Sisk, associate professor of the practice in the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, for the Civic Data Literacy for Libraries: A Civic Switchboard Institute project.
This project, hosted by regional partners, is for library workers who are interested in serving as intermediaries between community members and civic data and developing civic data roles for their libraries.
Attendees will discover critical dimensions of data work, including power, social justice, and responsible data practices to mitigate harms, and will help to improve civic data educational materials for a library audience.

Join Natalie Meyers, Professor of the Practice at the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, for a Panel conversation on AI and Bioethics. This session (Panel 35) acknowledges the pivotal role of AI-induced social and moral change in bioethics inquiries.
The use of AI in research and its potential influence on the epistemological landscape raises significant ethical questions. This session will delve into the potential biases in AI-generated scientific insights, issues related to transparency and reproducibility and the ethical considerations in using AI to advance scientific understanding and open science.
