Hi everyone,
It’s my great pleasure to introduce Map it Out, where I’m writing from the lands of the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation.
This is our last issue of Map it Out for 2022, and I am thrilled to take this opportunity to reflect on the award-winning Digital Cadastre Modernisation (DCM) project.
Together with our delivery partners, the DCM team has been doing ground-breaking work to digitise all 3.3 million of Victoria’s property parcels. Using the digital data, Victoria’s cadastral map of parcel and property boundaries has been developed into a more spatially accurate 2D digital representation, with many areas seeing significant improvements.
In late October, this work culminated in a landmark moment with the very first digital dataset released into Vicmap for Hobsons Bay. Over the next 12 months, streams of rich new data will be progressively delivered into Vicmap for every municipal council. Most recently Banyule was released, which followed releases for Nillumbik, Darebin and Bayside.
This is great news for all users of Vicmap, Victoria’s authoritative suite of foundational spatial data that’s accessed more than 500 million times each year across different platforms.
The journey over three years to this moment has required innovative solutions to meet the challenges posed by the scale and complexity of this project. Some of the highlights include:
- Collaboration across an international supply chain to innovate and deliver in the context of the pandemic.
- Development of sophisticated algorithms and automated processing systems by all project partners.
- Using aerial imagery to place 80,000 nodes in areas with limited survey control, helping us create the parcel fabric across rural Victoria.
- Early release of captured and adjusted data, a Readiness Toolkit and Vicmap delivery schedule to help stakeholders get ready for new data.
Digitising these foundations is transformative work that is essential for our next steps towards a 100% digital land administration system. Improved digital property data and a more accurate and usable Vicmap Property will support a huge range of more efficient land processes for the private sector, our community, emergency services and all levels of government.
The spatially upgraded data will also underpin new capabilities like digital survey plan lodgement, our Digital Twin Victoria (DTV) platform and the future development of a 3D cadastre for Victoria.
My thanks to the dedication of the DCM and Vicmap teams, together with our expert delivery partners responsible for different parts of this process: DSM Geosoft, Spatial Vision and Jacobs.
Thank you also to all the stakeholders and customers who are on this journey with us, and we’re looking forward to further engagement in 2023. Please visit our Land.Vic website or email the DCM and Vicmap teams for further information.
Wishing all a happy and safe festive season.
