Communications
Happy New Year! As you may have noticed, we've been in the process of transitioning some communication responsibilities over the past couple of months. Laura and Hilary have been doing a lionshare of the communications work for the office and we are so grateful to you for all you've done! Going forward, Emily and Ashley will manage both internal HR and campus-wide communications. Please feel free to reach out to us via email with any requests or communication needs you might have. As we continue to understand the landscape, we may be in touch with additional updates. Thank you!! - Emily & Ashley

Sharon Hawkins | Associate Director, HR Consulting
What is one thing your colleagues should know about you? - I wanted to be a pediatric nurse when I was growing up, until my sister who became a critical care nurse told me I would have to care for children who had broken bones and life threatening injuries. That led me to change my career path. I believe that God had plans for me. While I was in college studying Sociology, I was offered the opportunity to become a personnel manager, with Target stores. I accepted the promotion with Target which led to me being recruited by Notre Dame. I initially turned the Notre Dame position down. Rich Nugent who was Asst. Director of ND HR at that time reached out to me and convinced me to join the team. I joined the ND HR team on January 1, 1999. One of the things Rich told me at the time is that he wanted me to join the team because of my ability to build relationships. Building positive relationships is a huge piece of who I am and what motivates me.
What is one of your proudest achievements in your career thus far? - It’s hard to choose one achievement, but I think being in our department for the past 24 years. The past 24 years at ND have given me the opportunity to do so many things that I enjoy doing. In some ways I think it ties back to my desire to be a nurse. As an HR professional I am able to work with great teams to provide resources, guidance and hopefully impact people's lives in positive ways, which includes my family. My children often come to me about HR issues they face in their professional lives. Shawniece (Indiana Department of Education), Sherrell (DOZ Accounting), and Sharmane (Child Protective Services). I also serve on two community boards, Goodwill Industries of Northwest Indiana and 466 Works, where my responsibilities include providing input and guidance on HR related opportunities.

Let’s do lunch!
This semester, we want to provide the opportunity for everyone to get to know others outside of their work teams.
Everyone in the HR department had a 5-meal plan loaded to their account. Each month this semester you will be teamed up with a new group of 2-3 other people, hopefully outside of your direct team, to have lunch with. You will be free to collectively schedule your own date, time, and location for lunch.
Please see this list for your January lunch group. The campus dining halls open up for the semester starting January 17.
Lunch is on us! The conversation is on you.

Happy New Year! It’s a great time to make some resolutions and really stick to them. I’ve established several “why’s” behind sustainability (i.e. why you should care about changing your behaviors to be more eco-friendly). I’ve also started and will continue to talk about the “how” in this coming year. Considering the time of transition we’re in, I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to reflect upon our daily habits and question why we do what we do and whether or not we can change.
It doesn’t have to be everything at once, and it is more than okay to “fall off the wagon,” but the new year is a great time to rethink how you’ve spent your past year and make the upcoming year better. To celebrate our first HR newsletter in 2023 and to provide some quick inspiration, please consider checking out the articles and videos below and consider what environment-loving habits you can form this year to reduce your impact one day at a time.

If you have information you'd like included in future newsletters please send those to Emily. Any content received by noon on Thursday each week will be included in Friday's newsletter. Thank you!
