Lael Wilcox ’08 has claimed the world record for the fastest woman to cycle around the world. The 38-year-old Anchorage native completed the 18,125-mile journey in 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes, finishing in Chicago on Sept. 11. Her time, if certified by Guinness World Records, will beat the previous record by more than two weeks.
Wilcox, who ran cross-country at Puget Sound while studying French and natural sciences, began her ride in Chicago, crossed Europe, biked across Australia and New Zealand, and returned to North America. She averaged over 166 miles per day.

Master of Public Health student Nicole Hirao MPH ’25 has been selected to be a This Is Public Health Ambassador for the 2024–25 school year. She is one of 97 graduate students nationwide chosen by the Association of Schools & Programs of Public Health for the program. Ambassadors elevate public health awareness by hosting virtual events, sharing information on social media, engaging with their cohort online, and developing projects and presentations that bolster interest in public health education and careers.

Campus Technology Upgrades

This summer, Technology Services implemented several key upgrades as part of its Strategic Roadmap to enhance campus technology and improve user experience. These upgrades include:

A streamlined service catalog and ticketing system is now available. Easily submit help requests, search the knowledge base, and track requests by accessing the "Support Portal" on login.pugetsound.edu.

A new, self-service Media Equipment Checkout system is now live, offering access to over 100 devices and accessories. Reserve equipment through the "AV Equipment Checkout" tile.
- Several classrooms received audio/visual upgrades, including improved audio systems, USB-C compatibility, and simpler controls.

Classrooms such as WY-208, WEY-218, and others have been updated to enhance the learning experience. The student printer fleet has been fully replaced with new Konica Minolta printers, including additional color printers. The new printers feature touchscreen interfaces and improved ease of use.

Last week, students from a variety of majors gathered in Upper Marshall Hall to share their summer internship experiences and insights. From gaining hands-on experience in their field of study to developing valuable professional skills, the students shared about their time working in various industries. The symposium is a valuable opportunity for students to learn from each other and explore potential career paths.
