Here's some advice for navigating the registration process:
Section numbers with “R” require R-clearance or room in the class to register.
| Section numbers with “D” require D-clearance from the department to register.
Discuss D-clearance for classes in your major's department with your First-Year Advisor. To request D-clearance for classes outside your major's department, try these resources:
View your D-clearance status in Web Registration > MyInfo > Cleared Sections.
Prerequisite courses or their equivalent must be done before advancing to the next course in a sequence. Check out these tips:
Request prerequisite waivers, if eligible. Satisfied prerequisites with an equivalent exam or course? Consult your First-Year Advisor about waiver eligibility.
| |
View a Meet Your Major video from academic advisors in your major's department and get insider info on classes, research, study abroad and more!

Discover Dornsife Clusters |
Dornsife majors and minors with common themes, questions, and approaches are grouped into clusters. Want to add a major? Interested in minor options? Try exploring programs by cluster!
Students in the Humanities cluster's East Asian Languages & Cultures Department take deep dives into diverse Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures. Coursework covers such varied topics as samurai ethics and K-pop! Study abroad programs in Japan, South Korea, and China immerse students in enriching, real-world experiences. Campus opportunities abound too, from independent research to student clubs and cultural events!
The Department of Psychology in the Social Sciences cluster has a variety of opportunities to explore motivations behind human behavior, from lower-division and upper-division research courses to departmental honors, honors organizations, and off-campus study experiences.
The Natural Sciences cluster's Quantitative & Computational Biology Department prepares students to excel in a world increasingly driven by data. Its curriculum provides a foundation in the biological sciences that is enhanced by studies in advanced mathematics and computer science. Students in these programs will help meet the demand for biologists capable of rigorous data analysis.

Want to boost academic skills or gain a deeper understanding of your field? Consider research! Many students engage in research as upperclassmen, but there are opportunities for freshmen too. These might be in your academic department or throughout Dornsife and USC. Professors in your classes and major are a great resource! See our flyer for tips.

Valerie Kuo is a senior Environmental Studies major with a passion for social and environmental justice. As a mentor in Environmental Studies, Valerie introduces underclassmen to the field, connecting them with faculty and sustainability efforts. As a communication intern for the USC Sea Grant, she participates in investigations of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) contamination. She is also a policy intern for TreePeople, contributing to the Fifth Climate Assessment Los Angeles Regional Report.
When asked about advice for first-year students, Valerie encourages trying out different classes, activities, and opportunities even if they don't align with a major or academic focus: "By being open to various experiences you can discover new passions, develop transferable skills, and expand your network in unexpected ways." This openness led her to learn more about issues affecting the environment, ones she might not have discovered had she stayed in her comfort zone.
“By being open to various experiences you can discover new passions, develop transferable skills, and expand your network in unexpected ways.”
She also urges first-year students to ask questions: ask professors, supervisors, and peers. Making inquiries to increase understanding is part of taking the initiative and advocating for ourselves.
