The Crisis of Expertise, Revisited: How Lay Experts are Transforming the Politics of Knowledge and AuthorityThursday, May 7, 2026, 5:00 - 6:30 PM
Spilker Building, Room 232 Please join us for a lecture and Q&A with STS Scholar Steven Epstein, Professor of Sociology and John C. Shaffer Professor in the Humanities at Northwestern University. His research and teaching examine the contested production of expert and especially biomedical knowledge, with an emphasis on the interplay of social movements, experts, and health institutions, and with a focus on the politics of sexuality, gender, and race. His award-winning books include Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge (1996), Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research (2007), and The Quest for Sexual Health: How an Elusive Ideal Has Transformed Science, Politics, and Everyday Life (2022).

Project Coordinator - Community EventsCommunity Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) provides the youth of our city a sense of belonging and vital tools and experiences to succeed in life. Our services include academic support and college counseling, job placement and employment training, substance use and violence prevention education, crisis intervention and mediation, leadership development, and technology and computer training. Our mission is to encourage a diverse population of high-need young people to explore their full potential through academic, career, family, and community life. The Project Coordinator will support a variety of CYC community programs, events, and media-related projects by assisting with event planning and coordination, TV show production support, promotional content creation, social media promotion, and on-site project execution. Working closely with CYC staff, this part-time role requires someone who is organized, creative, flexible, and comfortable in a fast-paced community-focused environment, with the ability to collaborate effectively in both remote and on-site settings.

Applied AI Summer Intern for Stanford Historical Research The Applied AI Summer Intern for Stanford Historical Research supports the Stanford University Archives and Stanford Historical Society, part of Stanford Libraries, in testing and reporting on the efficacy of AI tools, including software available through the Stanford AI Playground such as Google NotebookLM, to assist with research requests. This work will take place in person at Green Library on the Stanford campus during July and August 2026. This internship is reserved for a current Stanford undergraduate or co-term. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated interest in history and the use of technology to provide access to historical documentation, and a passion for helping others locate resources and tell the stories of the past. Excellent communication skills, organizational abilities, accuracy, and attention to detail; demonstrated problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to work quickly, efficiently, and meet project goals and deadlines; ability to work with digital and print media; experience using word processing applications and spreadsheets.

Technology Projects Contracts InternNextFlex is America’s Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute—and the place where breakthrough electronics move from idea to impact. In this position, the Technology Projects Contracts Intern will be exposed to hybrid electronics technology projects from the perspective of contracting and project management. The intern will have the opportunity to learn the basics of government contracting and mitigating risk for the company.
