As we move into the final stretch of our classification process, I want to take a moment to recognize the depth of engagement our community has brought to PIVOT. The self-studies, conversations, and feedback you have shared reflect a genuine commitment to PSU’s future, and they are shaping the decisions ahead in meaningful ways.
This edition of the Pulse Check provides an update on where we stand with Track 1 and Track 2 review processes, what you can expect in the coming weeks, and how to stay engaged and informed. I know this period of uncertainty has been difficult, and I am grateful for your continued patience and candor.
With appreciation,
Shelly Chabon, PhD
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Academic Program Optimization - Track 1 |
Since our last update, deans worked with their units to gather feedback on preliminary classifications. Following that feedback period, deans submitted updated program classifications (Grow, Sustain, Revitalize, and Sunset) to the Provost on February 2. The Deans' Council and Provost have continued meeting to calibrate classifications across colleges, with the goal of ensuring that the potential actions identified for each category carry consistent meaning institution-wide. Recommended program classifications were then reported to President Cudd.
|
Recommended program classifications have been submitted to President Cudd, who will make the final determinations as part of the university budget planning process and broader Bridge to the Future efforts.

Academic Support Units, Administrative Structures, Centers, and Institutes - Track 2 |
Unit self-studies were submitted by the February 6 deadline. Thank you to all designated points of contact for completing this important work. Following submission, each unit was assigned primary and secondary reviewers (who were either a dean, dean-equivalent, vice provost, SFO, assistant/associate vice presidents, or associate vice provost). These reviewers evaluated unit self-studies alongside the quantitative data in the Unit Vitality Profiles.
Reviewers worked in two capacities: primary reviewers evaluated self-studies directly, sought clarification from unit leaders where needed, and developed preliminary classification ideas. Secondary reviewers provided additional perspective, surfaced any questions or concerns requiring further attention, and helped ensure consistency and fairness across units with similar functions.
The full review team then met to discuss possible classifications of Invest, Sustain, Reassess, Restructure/Consolidate, or Phase Out, as well as cross-unit collaboration opportunities and the intersections between Track 2 decisions and Track 1 and Operational Excellence.
|
This week, preliminary classifications were shared with President Cudd. In the coming days, unit leaders will reach out to the Track 2 designated points of contact to share their unit's preliminary classification and gather feedback. This input will inform any refinements before classifications are finalized and submitted for the President's final review. Refined classifications will then be paired with financial assessments to estimate savings, investment needs, and risks.
We will continue to update the PIVOT website as information becomes available.
